England host Austria at the Riverside Stadium (Middlesbrough) in International Friendly and the game kicks of at 8 pm (UK) on Wednesday, June 3. Read our reasons for England vs Austria prediction and betting tips.
Preparations step up for this summer’s European Championships as England take on Austria. England have won five straight matches ahead of this and Gareth Southgate’s men also tend to produce the goods when the pressure is off, winning each of their previous six friendly fixtures. Those wins came by an aggregate scoreline of 14 -1! On the other hand, visitors Austria, also participants in this summer’s big tournament, aren’t likely to be pushovers having won eight of their previous ten friendly encounters (L2) - seven of those victories saw them score 2+ goals. Franco Foda’s side haven’t tasted defeat in any of their previous five away trips (W4, D1), and also managed to secure a clean sheet in three of those matches.
Southgate will cut down his 33-man training camp to just 26 players on Tuesday, meaning this will be a great opportunity for players to impress the coaching staff ahead of the major decision. After cutting his squad down to 26, Southgate will then lead his England side into two pre-tournament friendlies taking place at the Riverside Stadium - against Austria and Romania. Attention will then turn to the European Championships group stages, with the Three Lions' opening game against Croatia taking place on June 13 at Wembley.
Injuries are Gareth’s biggest worry. England will be very hard for any team to beat if they reach the last four, with the semi-finals and final at Wembley, but to succeed I think Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson have to be fit. The experience, leadership, and steady nature of those players are crucial to let more creative players, namely Phil Foden, Jack Grealish, Mason Mount, and Marcus Rashford, in the side flourish. Harry Kane is also crucial in the attack, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin has scored four goals in seven appearances so far, including in both friendly games against Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
As for Austria, their poor showing at the last European Championship might have been sobering but a favourable draw means they again have high hopes of making a mark when Euro 2020 finally kicks off. Austria have been paired with the seeded Netherlands in Group C but will expect to finish above North Macedonia and Ukraine to reach the knockout stage. Their previous two appearances at the finals, as co-hosts in 2008 and in France in 2016, produced two drab draws and four defeats, so Austria will be desperate to make a better impression at Euro 2020.
On Wednesday though, Marko Arnautovic will miss out as he is struggling with injury. The 32-year-old former West Ham striker suffered a right thigh muscle tear playing for Shanghai Port earlier in May. Fellow striker Karim Onisiwo might also miss out after pulling out of Sunday's training with knee pain, while Stefan Ilsanker missed the session because of illness - but captain Julian Baumgartlinger is back in training. Austria still have the likes of David Alaba to trouble England, but Southgate’s men will still expect to win at the Riverside - even if they heavily rotate throughout the game.

England meet Austria for the first time since November 2007, a 1-0 friendly win with a goal from Peter Crouch in Vienna. Austrians last visited England for an away match back in October 2005 in a World Cup qualifier, losing 1-0 at Old Trafford. England’s last defeat to Austria came all the way back in June 1979, losing 4-3 in Vienna in a friendly.
England’s ten win to Austria’s four in their 18 head-to-head matches and, of course, the quality and the depth of the English squad put the English Lions in pole position ahead of this match.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
