EVERTON VS LEEDS MATCH ANALYSIS
Everton’s unbeaten run of 5 games came to an end (W4-D1) at Southampton (2-0) in the sixth week of the Premier League and they followed it with two more defeats to fall to 7th place. However, they bounced back last weekend with a tough away win in London against Fulham (2-3) to climb one place to 6th with 16 points. As for Leeds, the win against Villa in the 6th round pushed the Whites up the table to 3rd, albeit shortly, as they slipped down to 14th, with 11 points after two shocking 4-1 defeats – first against Leicester at home, and then against Crystal Palace in London – and the most recent goalless draw against Arsenal at home.
The hosts lost three games on the trot between rounds 7 and nine, which happened for the first time since Ancelotti was appointed at Everton, and after topping the league for a couple of weeks have fallen down the table. They have also shipped two or more goals in their last six Premier League fixtures, which is untypical of Ancelotti’s sides. However, after their most recent match, things are looking more positive for them as they await Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds at the weekend.
Dominic Calvert-Lewin continued his excellent scoring form with two goals and Richarlison made an immediate impact on his return from a three-match suspension. Fulham got two goals back, but could not mount the comeback completely as the Toffees held for an important win, and after a tough series of results, there were many positives for Carlo Ancelotti to take back to Liverpool. However, they have failed to protect their net since the opening day of the season and will have to be more convincing defensively against Leeds before the tough December fixtures.
Leeds, on the other hand, are surely looking to establish themselves back in the Premier League, after a 16-year absence from English football's top flight. The Villa result lifted Leeds to third for a short while, which is their highest position at the end of a day in the top-flight since September 2002. However, after back-to-back defeats, they fell down the pecking order. They looked shaky in the possession and indecisive off the ball in those games, and a draw against the top Arsenal side will surely lift their spirits ahead of their visit to Merseyside.
Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa will be happy with his side's performance against the Gunners, except for the finishing, as Bamford, Rodrigo and Raphinha squandered great opportunities to get maximum points. On another day Leeds could have scored five, but the draw means that they have only won once in their past six league games. The clean sheet also means they have now kept their net in 41 in 101 league matches since 2018 when Bielsa took over, which is now more than any other English side has managed in this period.

Encouraged by a 3-2 win over the Cottagers, Everton will want to give their supporters yet another reason for celebration when they host Leeds at Goodison Park in the next round. The Toffees did well to end their three-game losing run in the top division, with Calvert-Lewin scoring a brace. The Toffees are open about their ambitions to clinch one of the European berths this season, so they need to keep on climbing in the table. Therefore, they will probably go into the game with an attacking mindset.
The Whites, on the other hand, failed to win the previous three league fixtures, but they did well to hold Arsenal to a goalless draw on Matchday 9. Marcelo Bielsa’s men undisputedly suffered a dip in form, which is probably the main reason why we are tempted to put our money on the hosts. The likes of Llorente, Hernandez, Forshaw, and Shackleton remain on the sidelines through injury.
