EVERTON VS NEWCASTLE MATCH ANALYSIS
The host await Newcastle after losing 2 to-1 the Magpies in a reverse fixture at the St.James Park on November 1. They come into this game on the back of a Round 5 Fa Cup win against Championship side Sheffield Wed and a 1-1 draw against Leicester in the league. They are in 7th with two games in hand and could make a serious top-four push with a win here. As for Newcastle, they haven't won a competitive match since a 2-1 win over West Brom in mid-December. They are on an eleven-game winless run (D2, L9) in all competitions and are coming into this game on the back of four PL defeats, with the latest being in midweek against Leeds at home (1-2). They are seven points from safety in 16th place and could do with at least a point here.
It looks like some of Ancelotti’s class has finally started rubbing off on the team as well. Everton have done well so far despite the absence of James Rodriguez in midfield for most parts of the season. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has arguably been the Toffees standout performer so far, with the England international scoring 19 goals in all competitions and impressing with his all-round play. The Toffees are looking to win their fourth match in five (D1) in all competitions.
Victory on a soggy Wednesday night on Merseyside against Leicester would have lifted Ancelotti's side into the top four, with their sights on what he calls "the best competition in the world". But if they are to break into the established top six, or even top four, they would have had to overcome a Leicester side who offered more energy on the night. The Toffees have now only lost once in their past seven league games, but this result showed they may be hard-pressed to make the top four with the Europa League offering a more realistic target.
As for Newcastle, they remain on the losing course. They were knocked out of the EFL Cup quarter-final at the hands of Championship side Brentford, lost to Arsenal in the Fa Cup, and lost five more league games after a gutsy draw against Liverpool has eased the pressure a bit. It has been a rotten month for Newcastle since they beat West Brom on December 12. Newcastle have lost five consecutive away league games for the first time since October 2019 and are coming into the Everton match as obvious underdogs.
11 games in all competitions is the longest winless run of Bruce's career, but he was encouraged by his Newcastle side's second-half display in a home defeat by Leeds. Tuesday's loss means they have now picked up just two points from the past 27 available to them and scored only once in their last five games. Newcastle have been deprived of some of their best attacking talents in recent weeks because of injury and illness, but on more positive news, Allan Saint-Maximin came off the bench against Leeds and almost inspired his side to a point. He will at least give them some much-needed cutting edge against Everton.

Everton have lost one of their last 16 home Premier League matches against Newcastle (W10 D5). Newcastle were victorious in the reverse fixture on November 1 (2-1), but haven’t recorded a Premier League double over Everton since 2001.
Looking at the table and the current form of both teams, Everton are rightfully considered favourites here, as the Toffees have lost just one of their last eight Premier League games (W5 D2), while their opponents have lost their last five PL away games, failing to score in any of the last four. Steve Bruce's position appears perilous and edging towards untenable if they fail to win in their tenth consecutive top-flight match.
