Everton host Southampton at the Goodison Park (Liverpool) in the 1st round of the 2021/22 Premier League season and the match kicks off at 3 pm (UK) on Saturday, August 14. Read our reasons for Everton vs Southampton prediction and betting tips.
TOFFEES AND SAINTS SET TO ENDURE ANOTHER BUMPY RIDE
Everton and Southampton both have checks to make over key personnel ahead of Saturday's curtain-raiser. Richarlison is only just back from the Olympics and Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a doubt for Everton, while James Ward-Prowse has only just recovered from a knee injury for Southampton. Everton prepared for Saturday's game with a heavy 4-0 defeat to Man Utd at the weekend, while Southampton were brushed aside 3-1 by Athletic Club. Not ideal for either side. There are definitely going to be bumps in the road for both managers this season. Everton, however, have not lost a Premier League home match to Southampton since 1997.
CAN BENITEZ WIN OVER THE SCEPTICS?
Everton are beginning a new era under manager Rafa Benitez with the Spaniard tasked with bringing some consistency to Goodison Park and improve on their 10th place finish from last season. They didn’t look particularly convincing in the pre-season, although the result against Man Utd was their only defeat in three warm-up matches. Benitez has a reputation for being a conservative manager and his first duty will be to tighten up the team at the back.
He will be keen to make a good early impression and will fancy his chances against an out of sorts Southampton team. Comings and goings on the playing side have been minor, with Andros Townsend, Demarai Gray and Asmir Begovic only adding strength in depth. Nevertheless, Benitez has inherited a strong squad and will want to get off to a quick start. And the omens are there for the hosts as the home side have lost only three of the last 23 meetings between these teams, stretching back to April 2002.
SOUTHAMPTON LOOK UP AGAINST IT WITHOUT INGS
Southampton endured a torrid second half to last season, winning the fewest points of any Premier League team over the last 25 games. The Saints ended in 15th place, having briefly held top spot early on. They leaked 68 goals, the second-worst tally in the division, and struggled on the road claiming just four away wins and scoring just 19 times on their travels. Ralph Hassenhuttl's task has been made even more difficult with the departure of top scorer Danny Ings, which raises the question of where their goals will come from.
Losing Ings to Aston Villa was a big blow, but teenage Albania forward Armando Broja joins on a season-long loan from Chelsea after catching the eye in pre-season friendlies. The 19-year-old spent last season on loan at Dutch side Vitesse, scoring 11 goals in 34 appearances as they finished fourth in the Eredivisie. Saints have also brought in Blackburn striker Adam Armstrong as they try and replace the goals scored by Ings.

The former Liverpool boss has been tasked with replacing Carlo Ancelotti, who returned to Real Madrid, as the Toffees target European football after just missing out last season. They only won six games at Goodison Park but are fancied to improve with supporters back in the ground. With Danny Ings now at Aston Villa, Southampton will need to find alternative attacking options in the final third. Everton are the better team at the moment and should be able to win this game.

Tucker grew up in London, more precisely in West London. But, unlike many locals, he doesn’t like big and famous teams from that part of the city. Instead, ever since he was a kid, Tucker was passionate for lower divisions. This passion was born when his uncle from Reading took him to the local derby with Aldershot Town when he was 6 and since that moment football was running through his veins. He became a huge fan of the Royals for life, and whenever he could, he goes to Madejski Stadium to enjoy the game. Apart from being a job, his sports knowledge also becomes more than useful when he is betting live on high stakes which is also his passion.
