Cesare Prandelli prepares for his first match since the announcement of his return to Fiorentina and the Viola host struggling Benevento at the Artemio Franchi.
The former Italy CT returned to Fiorentina after 10 years and will start his second stint with a home game against Filippo Inzaghi’s newly-promoted men. Ahead of the international break, Fiorentina followed a 2-0 defeat to Roma with a 0-0 draw against Parma at the Ennio Tardini and prepare for their first home game in Serie A since October 25. Fiorentina had more possession and the best scoring opportunities with Cristiano Biraghi and Christian Kouame but was held to a goalless draw by Parma. In Beppe Iachini’s final game on the Viola bench, he went out without a real fight, failing to break down a very defensive Parma. This was a point that does precious little to boost either side, who remain solidly in the bottom half of the table.
Prandelli is expected to continue in a 3-5-2 formation, and Dusan Vlahovic, who scored his first goal for Serbia this week, could start up front with Franck Ribery. Jose Callejon has recovered from coronavirus but is not expected to start the match and Christian Kouame could start over Giacomo Bonaventura in the midfield five.
Only two points separate the sides after seven games and Prandelli will be expected to turn things around rapidly and build on previous success with the Viola. Fiorentina, who haven’t scored in 219 minutes in Serie A, have lost six of their 13 last games against a newly promoted side.
Fiorentina (3-5-2): Dragowski; Milenkovic, Caceres, Pezzella; Biraghi, Amrabat, Pulgar, Castrovilli, Kouame; Vlahovic, Ribery
Suspended: none
Injured: none
Benevento’s poor run was stretched to four Serie A defeats on the bounce when Spezia visited the Streghe last time. Spezia ran riot at the Stadio Vigorito with Tommaso Pobega and the first two career Serie A goals for M’Bala Nzola to stun Benevento. These sides were both promoted from Serie B last season, making this a relegation six-pointer just seven rounds into the campaign. Top-flight debutants Spezia dominated the match and came away with a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Pippo Inzaghi acknowledged Spezia deserved to beat Benevento, as determined to say to the media after the match that his side would lose against anyone with that performance. Spezia is a side that finished over 20 points behind them in Serie B last season. The performance was a good reason for Inzaghi to roll their sleeves up and get back to work. They lacked determination and responsibility because the newly-promoted club must fight out for every ball. That was probably the first game they got completely wrong in terms of approach, so they should show some grit and fighting spirit against Viola on Sunday.
Benevento (4-3-2-1): Montipo; Letizia, Glik, Caldirola, Barba; Hetemaj, Schiattarella, Dabo; Insigne, Sau; Moncini
Suspended: Caprari
Injured: Tuia, Iago Falque
On a yellow card: Schiattarella

New coach Prandelli will have an immediate impact on the players who were dissatisfied with tactics and rotation since the start of the season. Benevento will react after a heavy home defeat, so both teams to score looks like a reasonable bet in the match between sides that like to play offensively.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
