It is rare to see champion and finalist of the last World Cup on the pitch together so the next match between WC holder France and Croatia at the Stade de France in Paris in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday should be a very interesting game.
Two years ago, France won the World Cup in a thrilling final vs Croatia, and in that time the whole world and also the football world changed too much. VAR, coronavirus pandemic, playing without the audience are usual suspects. That brilliant France team that conquered the world now has a heavy task to perform at any time and any place no matter who is next rival and in the first match of their group in the UNL they saw how their opponents are eager to fight until the end against world champions.
Sweden lost 1-0 at home against Didier Deschamp's side but showed they are dangerous rivals and capable to do damage to any team right now, even France. Deschamps changed style and formation for this match, trying to figure out if there is something that his team can't do but even with a more defensive approach that gives them space for fast counter attacks it was clear that France has good tactician on the bench and also players that can fit into any system and formation that football world can imagine. Sweden had the ball, their chances, but Mbappe was the one making the difference in the first half when he scored five minutes before the teams went to dressing rooms for the break. His shot was deflected slightly and change course to Robin Olsen's net but the young attacker was satisfied with the performance and win against a gritty team that fought until the end.
France could ease their final minutes but Antoine Griezman missed another penalty in his career after Victor Lindelof brought down Antony Martial in the penalty box. Barcelona striker missed the goal and as the ball went over the bar it was another reason for people to think that his out of touch after he switched his talents from Madrid to Catalonia.
Croatia has several worries after their big 4-1 defeat vs Portugal who played without Cristiano Ronaldo. Toe injury held the Juventus striker off the pitch but his teammates handled the situation very good and it is fair to say that they missed several chances and failed to push Croatia to football knockdown.
Regarding their football quality, it was more than a miserable performance from Zlatko Dalić's team that had many questions to answer after poor performance vs European champions Portugal who hit the woodwork three times before Joao Cancelo scored four minutes before halftime. Diogo Jota and Joao Felix both scored their first international goals in the second half, and Andre Silva put the ball into the net for the final result. Bruno Petkovic pulled one back for 3-1 and that was all from the Croatian team that needs to show more if they want even a slim chance against France.
It must be noticed that Croatia missed key midfielders Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic who had a tough schedule in the last month and need rest before the new club season. Also, the match could go differently because CSKA man Nikola Vlasic nearly gave them a second-minute lead but his shot was tipped around the post by Lyon goalkeeper Anthony Lopes. Portugal then made a complete U-turn, Joao Felix hit the bar, Diogo Jota headed into the post, and Guerreiro's long-range shot struck the upright. Cancelo's goal was the tip of the iceberg and Croatia didn't have another chance to back into the match. Zlatko Dalić gave a chance to some players who are believed to be the future of this team, but they came up short tonight and they must find what is missing before the France match.

France is a big favorite but they need some time to perfect their new style and approach with two forwards and three central defenders. Croatia could be in the big trouble and France to win and score over 2,5 goals are reasonable bets for this game.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
