France’s first step towards defending their World Cup crown will be on Wednesday when they welcome Ukraine to the Stade de France in Group D where visitors are trying to qualify for the final tournament for the first time since 2006. Read our reasons for France vs Ukraine prediction and betting tips.
France comes into this game on the back of a 4-2 win over Sweden last November at the Stade de France. A brace from experienced Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud and goals from Bayern Munich stars Benjamin Pavard and Kingsley Coman ensured victory for France. Krasnodar midfielder Viktor Claesson and Mainz forward Robin Quaison scored the consolation goals for Sweden. France has an immense quality in the squad and manager Didier Deschamps has picked a team capable to win against any in the world. Paris Saint-Germain attacker Kylian Mbappe, Real Madrid center-back Raphael Varane, Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba and Barcelona star Antoine Griezmann are among the names. Players like Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram, RB Leipzig center-back Dayot Upamecano, and Rennes' teenage sensation Eduardo Camavinga didn’t make the cut.
Fulham loanee Alphonse Areola has earned a recall to the national team, but Hugo Lloris is in no danger of losing his place in goal, as three caps this month would see him go level with Thierry Henry in the all-time appearances list. Paul Pogba joined up with the team trying to overcome his struggles at Manchester United, and the 28-year-old is expected to start here. Deschamps has not called on any uncapped players for this month's qualifiers - a statement of intent from the experienced coach - while Olivier Giroud and Anthony Martial seem set for spots up front after Mbappe came off early against Lyon with a minor problem.
France: Lloris; Pavard, Varane, Kimpembe, Hernandez; Kante, Pogba, Ndombele; Griezmann; Martial, Giroud
Ukraine lost 3-0 to Switzerland last November because Ukraine team members were placed in quarantine after positive COVID-19 results in the squad, so UEFA awarded Switzerland a win without playing the match. The team was on poor form, winning just one of the last seven matches while allowing six defeats, and have been unable to score more than a goal in the process. They had a surprising victory against Spain but that was almost all they achieved in a very hard UEFA Nations League group. The two countries last faced each other last year, with France beating Ukraine 7-1. A first-half brace from Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, an own goal from young left-back Vitaly Mykolenko, and goals from Rennes midfielder Eduardo Camavinga, Bayern Munich midfielder Corentin Tolisso, Paris Saint-Germain star Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona attacker Antoine Griezmann secured the win for France.
Ukraine and Shevchenko should line up in their 4-3-3 formation, with veteran goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov set to earn his 97th cap for the national team at the Stade de France. Viktor Tsygankov scored his side's consolation goal in their 7-1 loss against France last year in the difficult circumstances for the away side due to coronavirus crisis, but the Dynamo Kyiv man will not take part this month due to injury, while experienced midfielder Taras Stepanenko has also failed to make the cut with a muscle problem of his own. West Ham United's Andriy Yarmolenko - who sits second behind Shevchenko in the all-time goalscoring charts - will be joining up with the team despite his injury, but he may not be risked from the off.
Ukraine: Pyatov; Karavaev, Matvienko, Kryvtsov, Sobol; Sydorchuk, Zinchenko, Malinovskyi; Marlos, Yaremchuk, Konoplyanka

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
