France host Wales at the Allianz Riviera Stadium (Nice) in the International Friendly and the match kicks of at 8.05 pm (UK) on Wednesday, June 2. Read our reasons for France vs Wales prediction and betting tips.
In their first friendly ahead of EURO 2020, two-time European champions and reigning world champions France challenge in-form Wales. The world’s number-two ranked nation are currently enjoying a 16-game unbeaten run in competitive action (W13, D3), with nine victories during that period, so ‘Les Bleus’ should feel confident against their 17th-ranked visitors. After qualifying for the EURO for the second time in a row, Wales go into this encounter having won four of their previous five international matches (L1), with that sole loss coming against the world’s number-one ranked nation, Belgium (3-1).
Didier Deschamp’s side finished top of Qualifying Group H to book their place at this summer's tournament. Still fresh from the success of their 2018 World Cup triumph in Russia, France now turn their attention to the continental competition, as they look to continue their domination with a long-due glory in the Euros after booking their place there for the eighth straight time, where they will be partaking in the infamous group of death including European giants Germany and Portugal.
At home, however, Didier Deschamps’ men have won just one of their previous four international matches (D2, L1), and fell to a shock 2-0 friendly defeat against Finland, ranked 54th, in November. The big news from the France camp though is the presence of Karim Benzema after a five-year absence from the national team, and the veteran has a good chance of featuring this week while star players Kylian Mbappe and Griezmann more likely to get a rest and start on the bench.
On the other hand, Wales preparations are foreshadowed by their manager, Ryan Gigs, awaiting trial following the allegations of assault. The national side will be led by Robert Page who has a tough job on his hands to emulate the success of the 2016 glory when the Dragons reached the semi-finals of the Euros in their first-ever appearance in the competition. However, they haven’t won any friendly match outside Wales since 2008 (D1, L11) and failed to find the net in the last nine, including a 2-0 loss to France back in 2017.
Wales will carry a dose of realism, though after Bale and company lit up the European Championship in France five years ago as Red Dragons to become the smallest nation by population to reach the semi-finals, before losing to eventual winners Portugal. Chris Coleman’s side returned as national heroes with thousands of people lining Cardiff’s streets to greet them after the nation’s first appearance at a major tournament for 58 years. More importantly, there are eight survivors from that squad whose experience will hopefully lead them to another memorable tournament.

France meet Wales having played against the Red Dragons most recently back in November 2017 at the Stade de France, with Les Bleus winning 2-0 with goals from Antoine Griezmann and Olivier Giroud. Wales have won just one of their five previous meetings with France (D1, L3), which were all friendlies, beating Les Bleus 1-0 in Toulouse in 1982 with Ian Rush scoring the winner.
Deschamps may choose to give the fringe players the opportunity to impress here, but their ridiculous attacking options should see them kick off the preparations for the summer with a convincing win.
