Christian Streich's most influential player Vincenzo Grifo is out to end an 11-game scoring drought when Freiburg welcomes Augsburg on Sunday. Read our reasons for Freiburg vs Augsburg prediction and betting tips.
After suffering successive setbacks against RB Leipzig and Mainz, Freiburg will be bidding to revive their fading hopes of qualifying for Europe next season with a win at home to an Augsburg side who have also been blowing hot and cold in recent weeks. A 1-0 defeat at home to Union Berlin on Matchday 22 is one of the main reasons why Christian Streich's men are now playing catch-up in the race for a place in the top six, and with Changhoon Kwon making his comeback from a two-month injury absence as a late substitute in the 1-0 defeat to Mainz last weekend, the Freiburg coach does have an extra option for his attack.
A start may come too soon for the South Korean, but Ermedin Demirovic may
earn the nod to help Grifo end his lengthy drought, while Jonathan
Schmid should make his 275th Bundesliga appearance, adding to his record as the Frenchman with the most outings in Germany's top flight. The
Bundesliga's record France-born appearance-maker Jonathan Schmid has scored more goals against former club Augsburg than any other Bundesliga team, he's faced - five in 11 games. Grifo and Nils Petersen are
Freiburg's joint-top scorers this season with seven apiece.
Freiburg: Müller - Lienhart, Schlotterbeck, Heintz - Schmid, Sanatamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Sallai, Demirovic, Grifo
Out: Flekken (elbow), Keitel (groin), Tempelmann (ligament)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Christian Streich
Five
points in Freiburg's wake, Augsburg aspires to ensure their cushion
over the relegation zone remains at least as large as eight points
heading into the international break. Last weekend's surprise 3-1 win
over Borussia Mönchengladbach has given the Bavarians a timely boost,
and English midfielder Reece Oxford - who came off the bench against the
Foals - could be in line for a starting berth. Laszlo Benes probably
did enough to hold onto his place in the starting XI, although Florian
Niederlechner remains an option, should Heiko Herrlich favor a more
attack-minded approach for the prowl through the Black Forest.
Hahn
has had a direct hand in three goals in his last three appearances,
taking his tally for the season to six goals and three assists. Daniel
Caligiuri's goal involvement also stands at eight (five goals, three assists). Augsburg has scored 12 of their 27 league goals this season in the final 15 minutes of matches, amounting to 13 points.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Framberger, Gouweleeuw (c), Uduokhai, Gumny - Strobl, Khedira - Caligiuri, Benes, Richter - Hahn
Out: Civeja (pelvis), Finnbogason (calf), Iago (ankle), Jensen (thigh), Moravek (muscular)
Doubtful: Pedersen (groin)
Coach: Heiko Herrlich

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
