Freiburg will need to find a way to stop promoted Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday.
Freiburg is without a win in nine league outings since that Matchday 1 triumph. It’s their longest drought in six years. They have been slipping towards the danger zone and find themselves just a point above promoted Bielefeld, having not won since the opening weekend against the top flight’s other returnees, VfB Stuttgart. Christian Streich’s side has a run of three straight defeats with back-to-back draws against Augsburg and Borussia Mönchengladbach, having reverted to a 3-4-3 formation.
Vincenzo Grifo converted from the spot in the 2-2 draw with Gladbach and is expected to continue alongside summer signing Ermedin Demirovic in attack after he impressed Streich on his first two starts for the club over the last couple of matchdays. It means all-time top scorer Nils Petersen likely has to settle for a place on the bench again, although he does hold the Bundesliga record for goals by a substitute. Grifo and Petersen are Freiburg’s four-goal top scorers. Both struck in the club’s only league win of 2020/21, a 3-2 victory against the Bundesliga’s other promoted side, Stuttgart.
Freiburg: Müller - Lienhart, Schlotterbeck, Gulde - Schmid, Santamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Höler, Demirovic, Grifo
Out: Flekken (elbow), Haberer (ankle), Itter (muscular), Keitel (knee), Kübler (groin)
Doubtful: Kwon (not included)
Coach: Christian Streich
Japanese international Doan is the only Bielefeld player to have multiple goals and assists this season (two each). He got one of both in last week’s 2-1 win over Mainz. He first set up Manuel Prietl and then scored himself as 2019/20 Bundesliga 2 champions got their second win of the season following promotion. It was the 20-time Japan international’s second strike of the campaign, having previously netted in vain against Bayern Munich.
The three points over Mainz saw Arminia swap positions with their relegation rivals and move up into the play-off place in 16th – just one point and two spots behind their hosts this weekend, who they can leapfrog if they manage to win consecutive top-flight games for the first time since the end of the 2006/07 season. With few injury concerns, Uwe Neuhaus might be inclined to name the same side that started last week.
Bielefeld: Ortega - Brunner, Nilsson, Van der Hoorn, Lucoqui - Doan, Prietl, Hartel, Yabo - Schipplock, Klos (c)
Out: Laursen (knee), Maier (knock), Pieper (thigh), Voglsammer (calf)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Uwe Neuhaus

Freiburg is one of five teams yet to win at home in the Bundesliga this season (D3, L2). After a good performance from the last week maybe it is time to break the curse. The home win is our betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
