Vincenzo Grifo's Freiburg still has Europe in their mind as they welcome Hoffenheim for a Baden-Württemberg derby this Saturday. Read our reasons for Freiburg vs Hoffenheim prediction and betting tips.
Without a game in midweek, Freiburg comes into this derby match both rested and in high spirits after a 4-0 win over Schalke last weekend, combined with defeats for both Borussia Mönchengladbach and Union Berlin in midweek, left them well and truly in the hunt for a place in Europe next season. They lead a pack of three Baden-Württemberg sides jostling for a seventh-place finish which may be worth a place in the nascent UEFA Europa Conference League next season, and victory over Hoffenheim would both end their rivals' lingering hopes while boosting their own. Freiburg has won both of their last two home games in the Bundesliga, keeping clean sheets in each and scoring six times.
To give coach Christian Streich a boost, Italy international Grifo is available again and he can be expected to go straight back into the starting XI in what may be just one change from the team which beat Schalke, with Lucas Höler dropping to the bench. Grifo has gone 12 matchdays without scoring a league goal since he last found the back of the net in Freiburg's 3-1 victory against Hoffenheim in this season's reverse fixture.
Freiburg: Müller - Lienhart, Schlotterbeck, Heintz - Schmid, Keitel, Höfler, Günter (c) - Sallai, Demirovic, Grifo
Out: Santamaria (suspended)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Christian Streich
Hoffenheim came from 2-0 down to beat Gladbach 3-2 on Wednesday and give them an outside chance of joining that race for Europe, although local pride is most likely to be their motivation for this short trip to Freiburg. Coach Sebastian Hoeneß continues to have a long list of absentees and doubts, with Kevin Akpoguma, Mijat Gacinovic, Marco John, Sebastian Rudy, and Kevin Vogt at least back in contention for a place in his matchday squad. Havard Nordtveit could start in a three-man defense, which could also accommodate a return of Vogt in midfield, although Ryan Sessegnon holds the better cards to start here.
Sebastian Hoeneß's men went five games without a win (D2, L3) in the league, since a 2-1 victory at Wolfsburg on Matchday 24, before beating Gladbach in midweek. Andrej Kramaric rediscovered his scoring boots in midweek and this will be a further boost for Hoeneß' hopes of bagging local bragging rights this Saturday. Kramaric has the most goals from Freiburg-Hoffenheim's top-flight contests, with six. The Croatia international is TSG's top scorer this season with 16 goals and is on course to beat his single-season personal best for Bundesliga strikes - 17 in 2018/19.
Hoffenheim: Baumann (c) - Nordtveit, Posch, Richards - Kaderabek, Grillitsch, Samassekou, Sessegnon - Baumgartner - Bebou, Kramaric
Out: Bicakcic (knee), Geiger (hamstring), Hübner (ankle), Stafylidis (shoulder)
Doubtful: Akpoguma (knock), Gacinovic (ankle), John (foot), Rudy (knock), Vogt (calf)
Coach: Sebastian Hoeneß

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
