Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is looking to help Schalke build on only their second win of the campaign when they travel to Freiburg on Saturday. Read our reasons for Freiburg vs Schalke prediction and betting tips.
Freiburg's stuttering form is hampering their chances of European qualification, with a 1-0 defeat at Arminia Bielefeld last Friday leaving them seven points adrift of a UEFA Conference League spot. Three key men were missing for Christian Streich at Bielefeld, and two of them are expected to return for this weekend. Ermedin Demirovic and Lucas Höler are both back from suspension to re-join the attack, while Vincenzo Grifo is also back in training but may need to wait another week before he is fit to start. Grifo, Nils Petersen, and Rolland Sallai have each scored seven Bundesliga goals this season. However, of the combined 21-goal figure, only five have been scored this calendar year. That might explain why Freiburg has suffered more Bundesliga defeats since the start of March than any other club (four in five games).
Elsewhere, Niclas Höfler could be rotated back into midfield although Germany U21 international Yannik Keitel - who took his place at Bielefeld - was impressive despite Freiburg's defeat and could also start. Goalkeeper Mark Flekken is back playing for the reserves after months on the sidelines with an elbow injury. He has been promised Bundesliga minutes before the end of the season. Florian Müller's place is under pressure then, but not quite yet.
Freiburg: Müller - Gulde, Lienhart, Heintz - Schmid, Santamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Sallai, Demirovic, Höler

While Freiburg's form has stalled, Schalke is coming into this game looking to build on a rare victory last Sunday. The Royal Blues were deserved 1-0 winners over Augsburg with Suat Serdar's fourth-minute strike - coming on his 24th birthday - earning them three points for only the second time this season. Despite picking up that win, results around them mean that Schalke remains 13 points off Arminia Bielefeld in the relegation play-off spot. Dimitrios Grammozis' side knows that victory in almost every remaining game is imperative if they are to extend their top-flight stay. Huntelaar started against Augsburg and looked in good form having returned to full fitness following a calf strain.
Fellow January signings Sead Kolasinac and Shkodran Mustafi were on the bench, but the latter is expected to start as captain from midfield here. Benito Raman and Mark Uth could also be back in the squad this weekend to provide further attacking support for the league's lowest scorers. Of Schalke's five coaches in 2020/21, Grammozis has the strongest record: 0.8 points per game. That would have equated to 22 points throughout the campaign - one less than second-bottom Koln - compared to the club's current tally of 13.
Schalke: Fährmann - Becker, Stambouli, Thiaw - Aydin, Mascarell, Kolasinac (c), Calhanoglu - Serdar - Huntelaar, Harit
Out: Bentaleb (groin), Boujellab (ankle), Mendyl (ankle), Nastasic (calf), Skrzybski (knee)
Doubtful: Ludewig (foot), Mercan (knee), Raman (back), Uth (toe)
Coach: Dimitrios Grammozis

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
