Freiburg has won all three of their Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 meetings at home to Union, scoring at least three goals each time, strong stats tradition before they meet on Saturday.
The Black Forest side is unbeaten in their last seven at the Schwarzwald-Stadion, scoring at least two goals each time. That form, combined with only two league defeats since November – away at Bayern Munich and Wolfsburg – has seen Christian Streich’s team climb to within reach of the European places. Their club record in the top flight is 10 games without a defeat from 2012. They are currently only two points off Borussia Dortmund in sixth after beating BVB in their last home game but were held to a goalless draw away at Werder Bremen last weekend.
Still, Streich is expected to stick with largely the same team, even if it means the club’s all-time top scorer, Nils Petersen, has to continue his – admittedly fruitful – role from the bench. Petersen has scored against 16 of the Bundesliga's 18 current clubs. Only Union and Arminia Bielefeld are needed to complete the set. The former German striker has struck seven times this season. Ermedin Demirovic remains the first-choice center-forward.
Freiburg: Müller - Gulde, Lienhart, Heintz - Schmid, Santamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Höler, Grifo - Demirovic
Out: Flekken (elbow), Kwon (knee), K. Schlotterbeck (muscular)
Doubtful: Sallai (ankle)
Coach: Christian Streich
Loris Karius is expected to make his second straight start for the long trip southwest to Freiburg, who is one of the Bundesliga’s in-form teams and going through a real purple patch at home. Karius’ start last weekend was his first in the Bundesliga since May 2016 for Mainz. The Liverpool loanee is yet to concede in 111 minutes of playing time this season and has never lost in three Bundesliga meetings with Freiburg. Karius’ place in the Union line-up team is dependent on what happens with first-choice goalkeeper Andreas Luthe, who missed last week’s 0-0 draw with Schalke due to personal reasons. Head coach Urs Fischer explained that he doesn’t know when the 33-year-old will return. There was far more positive news at the other end of the pitch, though, with the Swiss coach confirming that Max Kruse could well be an option once again after almost three months out.
Die Eisernen has hit a rough patch with five games without a win, which has seen them slip to ninth and a point behind their Matchday 22 opponents. Left wing-back Christopher Lenz has missed the last three games with muscular problems but returned to full training this week. However, Niko Gießelmann is likely to retain his place for at least this game. Union was the second-highest scorers in the league behind Bayern after 16 matches (32 goals). They've found the net just twice in their last five, however - a league-low alongside rock-bottom Schalke.
Union: Karius - Friedrich, Knoche, N. Schlotterback - Trimmel (c), Prömel, Andrich, Gießelmann - Ingvartsen - Awoniyi, Pohjanpalo
Out: Becker (ankle), Luthe (personal reasons), Ujah (knee)
Doubtful: Kruse (thigh), Lenz (muscular)
Coach: Urs Fischer

Looking at the form, Freiburg is the clear favorite for the win. The home team is full of confidence and should gather valuable three points.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
