FULHAM VS MAN UTD MATCH ANALYSIS
Fulham did really well against Chelsea at the weekend despite playing the entire second half with 10-men, only losing 1-0. The Cottagers have really turned a corner under Scott Parker and are playing far better football than their current league position suggests. They drew their last five PL matches prior to this game and have also progressed to the Round 4 of the FA Cup with a 0-2 win against London Championship side QPR. As for Man Utd, they stayed top of the Premier League with a point at Liverpool on Sunday. The Red Devils remain the only undefeated side in the Premier League away from home this season and have had an excellent record at Fulham in their most recent meetings here.
Fulham entered 2021 in the bottom three regardless of their slightly improved but still disappointing December form (D4, L1). The last season's play-off winners in the Championship have been exposed for all their shortcomings and weaknesses so far in the league, but have significantly raised their game in December and the new calendar year, as they continue to make a push for safety. Scott Parker's side look improved, especially at the back, but they still can't win games - which is why they are still in the bottom three.
Fulham have taken points off Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton, while their only defeats have been against Manchester City and Chelsea, the latter of which was on Saturday after they were forced to play the majority of that West London derby with 10 men. The manager may be justified in thinking that his side would have got something out of that game had they kept 11 men on the pitch, but discipline has been an issue this season, with Robinson's red card the third they have picked up in the league so far in 2020-21 - no team has had more.
Man Utd, on the other hand, sit top of the table at this stage of a campaign for the first time since the Sir Alex Ferguson era and will feel this is the right time for another good away display. The jury is still out whether United are genuine title contenders, but a positive result on Sunday has certainly silenced the doubters. They are on their best unbeaten away league run since 1999 (W12, D4), and have scored a high average of 2.44 goals per PL away game this term, boasting the division’s best away record (W7, D2) so far.
As for their derby match at Anfield, a hugely-anticipated big game failed to live up to the hype on Sunday as the teams played out a largely dull and uneventful goalless draw at Anfield. While the result arguably benefitted Man City more than either of the teams involved, Man United would have undoubtedly been the happier of the two sides on Merseyside as they remained top in the league and came through what on paper is their biggest test of the season relatively unscathed.

After winning consecutive league games against Man Utd in 2009, Fulham are winless in their last 11 against the Red Devils (D2 L9), shipping 29 goals in that run. The Red Devils had won just four of their first 10 visits to the Cottagers in the competition (D4 L2). However, Man Utd have won their last four away top-flight games at Craven Cottage, by an aggregate score of 12-1.
Man Utd have now gone more than a year without losing a top-flight away game, and should they avoid defeat on Wednesday then they would equal their club-record of 17 consecutive Premier League games on the road without defeat and the challenge for Man United now is to stay on top. And while Fulham have tightened things up at the back, they’ll continue to struggle if they don’t have an attacking platform as they have also only scored three times in their last seven top-flight games.
