Bayern Munich teenager Jamal Musiala could make his senior international debut when Germany open their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign against Group J rivals Iceland on Thursday. Read our reasons for Germany vs Iceland prediction and betting tips.
Musiala broke English hearts when he declared for his country of birth, despite winning youth and U21 caps for the Three Lions. Musiala has represented Germany twice at the U16 level. He won 21 youth caps for England, scoring 10 goals. Joachim Löw called up the 18-year-old at the earliest available opportunity, the Bayern midfield starlet having made waves in his debut campaign at the pro level. The ex-Chelsea academy player has turned out 29 times in all competitions so far this season for the record champions, scoring four goals. He's not the only teenaged newcomer in the Germany squad, either.
Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Florian Wirtz has been rewarded for a breakout campaign that has yielded four goals and five assists in 22 Bundesliga appearances. The 17-year-old links up with former Leverkusen teammate Kai Havertz - one of a handful of names in the side based outside of the Bundesliga. Wirtz has played for Germany's U15s, 16s, 17s, and 21s, earning three caps for the latter as recently as October-November 2020. Löw, who will step down as coach after this summer's rescheduled UEFA Euros, can also count on at least five more members of Bayern's sextuple winners, including captain Manuel Neuer, Serge Gnabry, and Leroy Sane. Joshua Kimmich could come straight in after a bout of flu with Toni Kroos having pulled out of the squad. Neuer broke Sepp Maier's record as Germany's most-capped goalkeeper in his previous outing (96 caps). Of all players in the current squad, only Toni Kroos has made more senior appearances (101).
Germany: Neuer (c) - Can, Ginter, Rüdiger - Klostermann, Kimmich, Gündogan, Max - Sane, Gnabry, Werner
Out: Brandt (not included), Dahoud (not included), Draxler (not included), Gosens (muscular), Koch (knee), Kroos (groin), Henrichs (not included), Süle (thigh)

Coach: Joachim Löw
Iceland travels to the MSV-Arena in Duisburg, bidding to reach a World Cup finals for only the second time in their history. After 12 failed attempts, they made it to Russia 2018, where they finished bottom of a group that contained eventual runners-up Croatia, Lionel Messi's Argentina, and Nigeria. Augsburg striker Alfred Finnobogason started every game in Group D but has been restricted to 11 international appearances since.
The 32-year-old, who has played just 12 times in this season's Bundesliga, has a checkered injury past and misses out once more with a troublesome calf problem. Iceland head coach Arnar Vidarsson is also without Everton playmaker Gylfi Sigurdsson, Padova midfielder Emil Hallfreosson and Valerenga striker Vioar Örn Kjartansson. Romania and North Macedonia - Germany’s next two opponents in the March round of qualifying fixtures - complete Group J alongside Armenia and Liechtenstein.
Iceland: Halldorsson - Hermannsson, Ingason, Magnusson - Palsson - Saevarsson, Gunnarsson (c), Bjarnason, Skulason - Gudmundsson, Bödvarsson
Out: Finnbogason (calf), Hallfredsson (muscular), Kjartansson (not included), Sigurdsson (ankle)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Arnar Vidarsson

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
