Germany moved into second place behind Spain in the UEFA Nations League after they beat Ukraine and must be even better when they host Switzerland on Tuesday.
Germany secured their first win in the Nations League against Ukraine in a 2-1 victory in Kiev. After dropping points late in the last few matches, leading 1-0 at halftime on a goal from Mathias Ginter, Leon Goretzka doubled the lead right after the break with a “right place, right time” type of goal. Germany was looking for a third goal when Niklas Sule conceded a penalty, which gave a chance for a Ukrainian team and caused a nervy final fifteen minutes again. Although Germany never found their third goal, they were able to see the match out and take all three points. Germany was poor for their standards, but thanks to Draxler and a busy Serge Gnabry, Germany got the win. In particular, the PSG midfielder, seemingly inspired by Löw's faith in him, had another start from the first minute and gave back everything he could with neat passes in tight spaces and with solo efforts sliding between yellow jerseys.
That wasn't enough to hide the issues still on show in this Germany team. Löw's persistence with a back three left Germany unsettled again and trying to squeeze Joshua Kimmich, Toni Kroos, and Leon Goretzka into midfield didn't really work. "We didn't play well", Matthias Ginter said afterward. "We lost a lot of balls and made simple errors today. Mistakes like that and the number of them are rare in a Germany team." So Ginter had to make timely tackles and interceptions to help Germany keep the clean sheet for most of the game. Löw's biggest problem is that this team is tough to watch at the moment. There are flashes of brilliance with too much individual quality, but the flowing, fluid, confident performance often associated with Germany is still missing.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored early to help an underwhelming Spain secure a scrappy 1-0 victory over Switzerland in the Nations League on Saturday, keeping them top of their group. Switzerland missed out on the first chance of the game with keeper David de Gea reacted well to deny Loris Benito, before the visitors handed Spain the lead on a plate. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer tried to take a short goal kick but misplaced his pass to Granit Xhaka, with Mikel Merino stealing the ball and feed Real Sociedad Oyarzabal, who finished with ease.
The Swiss did find the back of the net in the second half but the goal was ruled out for a foul during the build-up. The likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and Silvan Widmer did push forward towards the end of the game but failed to find the equalizer as Spain picked up an important victory. Spain had twelve shots, with just two on target. Switzerland in comparison had just four shots in the entire game, with only one being on target, which De Gea did well to keep out. Spain also dominated possession and territory throughout the game.
Spain lead Group 4 with seven points. Germany has five points after beating Ukraine 2-1 on Saturday, leaving Ukraine with three points. The Swiss are last with one point. Switzerland kicked off their Nations League campaign with a disappointing 2-1 loss to Ukraine, before holding Germany to a 1-1 draw in Basel. Gundogan scored for the visitors in the first half but Widmer's goal earned the only point of the campaign for the Swiss team.

It is clear that Germany is in a crisis regarding their playing style and expected performances but their quality is still high above the Swiss team so a home win for them is the most reasonable bet at the moment.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
