Goteborg and FC Copenhagen will meet on Thursday at Gamla Ullevi stadium in the Nordic derby but also a qualifier for the group stage of the UEFA Europa League
Not a three-pointer since July 2nd - but with Roland Nilsson, the new coach at the helm, IFK Goteborg became a winning team again. They had 14 straight games without a victory in the Allsvenskan when he took over the job as head coach after Poya Asbaghi and they beat Falkenberg 3-0 away. Nilsson changed formation to classical 4-4-2, gave orders to starting eleven a day before and magic worked, that was not an easy or beautiful game as the final result suggests but win and three points will help in getting the job done and that is avoiding relegation stress until end of the season. He spoke to the media after the game and said that was a really short amount of time to change something but the first task was to stop conceding, keep a clean sheet, and second was to give confidence to the team with the leading goal.
After that, Goteborg was looking better in the field but after the game players had not many reasons to celebrate, because of their current standings in the table. Goteborg is 12th in the league of the 16 teams and after 20 games they have the same amount of points. Goteborg won only three times in the new season and had 11 draws and there is a feeling that many missed chances costed them because they scored only 24 goals.
IFK Goteborg has several problems in this season and one of the biggest is their financial situation, there is no secret that the club needs to sell players. They sold the defensive talent Jesper Tolinsson to Belgian Lommel SK, and sports director Pontus Farnerud was trying to keep the player on the loan for the remainder of this season and that will be resolved in the next days. He noted that the players do not become more attractive when the results have gone against them and they have faith that good performance in Europe can turn luck in their favor.
FC Copenhagen had a good last season in Europe and reached the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League. Manchester United was better on their quest to glory but F.C. Copenhagen has been through a very different preseason because they played European games after the Superliga ended this summer, and some players have been away with the national team in recent weeks. They were together just from the last Thursday so it is clear that they are not in the proper shape and form they want at the start.
The goal for this season is to win the championship, after a tough season domestically. There were many reasons for that, but they have again a strong team that is bigger on rotation and must be able to perform in both the Superliga and Europe. Copenhagen started a very bad domestic campaign and found themselves 3-0 down at the break against OB and just Kamil Wilczek double in the second half gave them hope, but it wasn't enough to secure a point. Their manager Stale Solbaken was very critical about their performance, saying that was embarrassing for him in charge, for players, and definitely for the fans because of the high expectations. He stated that his players looked like being not mentally ready and without showing either will, faith or leadership.
One of the reasons was also a relaxed attitude, and they started in the league like last season. Every time FC Copenhagen lost the ball, it looked like OB could make a perfect transition, run-down, and score. The adjustments were made, the lines were closer together, but the late effort wasn't enough. Also, they lost Michael Santos, the striker is loaned out to the Spanish second division Leganés. He was one of the players who pushed the club to Europa League group games last year, Santos has made 36 appearances as well as nine goals.

When both teams are struggling it is reasonable to go with the quality. FC is a big favorite to win this match because of their European pedigree and experience, bigger budget, a team from the better league.
So, my final Goteborg vs Copenhagen Prediction: FC Copenhagen to win

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
