Both teams have their points to prove when Hertha Berlin host rock-bottom Schalke on Saturday.
Hertha slipped to within three points of the relegation play-off spot after their 4-1 defeat at Freiburg before the shortened winter break. The Old Lady are now winless in four and have only taken maximum points once in their last five. Captain and defensive linchpin Dedryck Boyata went off injured in that game, and the Belgian will miss out this weekend. The performance of substitute Javairo Dilrosun was one of few positives from the Freiburg loss, the Dutchman having set up the equaliser and struck the woodwork before Hertha capitulated.
The visibly fatigued Cunha made way for Dilrosun at half-time, and the winter break will doubtless have done the club's six-goal top scorer the power of good. Head coach Bruno Labbadia's hand could also be strengthened by Colombian striker Jhon Cordoba, who is nearing a return following six games out through injury. Niklas Stark is likely to drop back from midfield in place of Boyata - potentially paving the way for Lucas Tousart to return - while Mathew Leckie is another injury absentee.
Hertha: Schwolow - Zeefuik, Stark (c), Torunarigha, Plattenhardt - Tousart, Guendouzi - Dilrosun, Darida, Cunha - Piatek
Out: Ascacibar (muscular), Boyata (foot), Leckie (abdominal)
Doubtful: Cordoba (ankle), Löwen (thigh)
Coach: Bruno Labbadia
Schalke also have personnel issues, with defender Salif Sane and midfielders Nassim Boujellab and Omar Mascarell all doubtful. Of greater concern will be their 29-game winless league run, dating back to 17 January 2020. The Royal Blues have since been through three head coaches, with Christian Gross the latest to be installed in the hot seat and charged with pulling the club off the foot of the table.
The 66-year-old has not coached in the Bundesliga since a spell with VfB Stuttgart in 2009, but he inherits a team that signed off for 2020 with a 3-1 win over fourth-tier Ulm in the DFB Cup second round. He also has forward Mark Uth available again, as well as goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow. The mercurial Harit, who was Schalke's second highest scorer last term, should continue in the side after registering an assist last time out.
Tasmania Berlin hold the record for most games without victoryi in the Bundesliga (31), but Schalke’s barren spell is the longest at what will be 351 days when they take to the field in the capital. Twenty-five matches without a clean sheet, meanwhile, is an new club record.
Schalke: Fährmann - Stambouli, Kabak, Nastasic, Oczipka (c) - Bozdogan, Serdar - Schöpf, Harit, Raman - Uth
Out: Bentaleb (not included), Ibisevic (not included), Ludewig (foot), Paciencia (knee)
Doubtful: Boujellab (knock), Mascarell (knock), Sane (knock)
Coach: Christian Gross

Hertha have only won three of their last 23 Bundesliga games against Schalke and this is the right time to make that record better in their favour. Home team must be clear favourite to win this match, although every coaching change can give something good to the struggling club.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
