Arsenal loanee Matteo Guendouzi is set to make his Bundesliga debut when Hertha Berlin host Wolfsburg on Sunday.
Arsenal defensive midfielder Matteo Guendouzi joined Hertha on a season-long loan in October, but injury and illness have prevented him from playing for his temporary employers until now. The 21-year-old's projected inclusion is timely, with Hertha on a four-match losing run since beating Werder Bremen 4-1 on the opening weekend of the new season. Hertha has made their worst start to a season for 11 years. The 2009/10 campaign ended in relegation to the second tier.
After coming up short against Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayern Munich, and VfB Stuttgart, Hertha was not helped by Deyovaisio Zeefuik's sending off within five minutes of his half-time introduction in last Saturday's 2-1 defeat at RB Leipzig. The man he replaced at the Red Bull Arena, Peter Pekarik, should continue at right-back, while Niklas Stark could make way for Guendouzi. Head coach Bruno Labbadia is otherwise set to name the same side that took an 11th-minute lead against the pre-Matchday 6 leaders through summer signing Jhon Cordoba's third goal in five Bundesliga games in a blue-and-white shirt. With Matheus Cunha a nailed-on starter in the supporting role, Poland international Krzysztof Piatek will have to make do with a place on the bench. Cunha is Hertha’s two-goal leading marksman after five match days but hasn’t scored in his last two. He netted his only goal in four career attempts against Wolfsburg in the 2018/19 DFB Cup last 16 whilst playing for RB Leipzig.
Hertha: Schwolow - Pekarik, Boyata (c), Alderete, Mittelstädt - Darida, Guendouzi, Tousart - Cunha - Lukebakio, Cordoba
Out: Torunarigha (ankle), Zeefuik (suspended)
Doubtful: Ascacibar (muscular), Klünter (calf)
Coach: Bruno Labbadia
Wolfsburg will take some beating regardless. The Wolves are one of only three unbowed teams left in this season's Bundesliga - Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen are the other two - and boast the joint-toughest defense in the division after five rounds of fixtures with just three conceded. After kicking off the campaign with four straight draws, Wout Weghorst and Maximilian Arnold combined to fire the 2008/09 champions to a 2-1 win over promoted Arminia Bielefeld. Weghorst has also scored twice for Wolfsburg. The Dutchman topped his side’s scoring charts in 2018/19 and 2019/20.
The victory came at a cost to captain Josuha Guilavogui, who is set for a spell on the sidelines after going off in the first half with a torn thigh muscle. Xaver Schlager should deputize once more, while Maximilian Philipp appears to have done enough to keep his place ahead of Brekalo on the left-hand side of the attack following an impressive debut. With Kevin Mbabu and William still on the comeback trail, Ridle Baku will continue on the right-hand side of a four-man defense marshaled by Berlin-born US international John Brooks, who spent 10 years at Hertha before moving to Wolfsburg in summer 2017. Brooks made 90 Bundesliga appearances for Hertha. The American is unbeaten in four meetings with his former club (W2, D2). Philipp was also born in the German capital and represented the Hertha youths. Wolfsburg’s new signing made his first Bundesliga appearance since February 2019 on Matchday 5.
Wolfsburg: Casteels - Baku, Lacroix, Brooks, Roussillon - Schlager, Arnold - Steffen, Mehmedi, Philipp - Weghorst
Out: Bruma (thigh), Guilavogui (thigh), Otavio (hamstring)
Doubtful: Mbabu (knee), Pongracic (match fitness), William (knee)
Coach: Oliver Glasner

It is very hard to predict the game between teams that underperformed in this season. Hertha’s run of the four losses shook their confidence that Wolfsburg did build with the win in the last game. Under 2.5 goals looks like a reasonable bet with a Wolfsburg team that has the second-best defense and second-worst offense in the league.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
