Andrej Kramaric must take center stage in the south-west derby when Hoffenheim host Freiburg on Saturday.
Hoffenheim climbed to 12th in the standings following a come-from-behind victory away to Borussia Mönchengladbach just before Christmas, with late goals from Kramaric and Ryan Sessegnon securing only their fourth league win of the season. Sebastian Hoeneß's side has not managed back-to-back Bundesliga victories since the first two games of 2020/21, so they will be looking to build momentum ahead of a crucial run of fixtures. Before the end of January, they face four of the teams currently in the bottom five: Schalke, Bielefeld, Hertha Berlin, and Koln.
Kramaric should help in that regard: the Croatian netted his ninth goal of the season against Gladbach following a four-game drought, and he is still averaging a goal every 99 minutes. There are some significant absentees, however, with midfielders Florian Grillitsch and Dennis Geiger out injured along with Ermin Bicakcic and Benjamin Hübner, while Stefan Posch is suspended. There is better news concerning Malian midfielder Didier Samassekou and Danish attacker Jacob Bruun Larsen, though, both of whom are ready for action again.
Hoffenheim have their lowest points tally after 13 games (15) in five years. They finished the 2015/16 campaign just a point clear of the relegation play-off place. Having only recorded two successive wins once this season, TSG has placed as high as first and as low as 13th.
Hoffenheim: Baumann (c) - Akpoguma, Vogt, Nordtveit, Sessegnon - Rudy, Baumgartner, Samassekou - Skov - Belfodil, Kramaric
Out: Bicakcic (knee), Geiger (hamstring) Grillitsch (abdominal muscle), Hübner (ankle), Posch (suspended), Stafylidis (shoulder)
Doubtful: Kaderabek (muscular), Samassekou (pubitis)
Coach: Sebastian Hoeneß
The winter break came at the wrong time for Freiburg. Freiburg has picked up more points in their previous five league outings than any other club (11), and are the only team to have won their last three on the trot. They had moved to 10th in the table on the back of a five-game unbeaten run that included wins in their last three league outings before Christmas - most recently a 4-1 thrashing of Hertha. Defeat to Stuttgart in the DFB Cup in the club's last match of the year was a setback, and now they'll bid to stay clear of the lower reaches of the table.
Vincenzo Grifo orchestrated the win over Hertha with a goal and an assist, so he is set to continue in attacking midfield. Grifo, who is ex-Hoffenheim, has scored six goals in 13 games in 2020/21, equalling his career-best single-season tally of 2018/19. Freiburg's all-time top scorer Nils Petersen is likely to be on the bench once more - despite hitting a late penalty last time out - with Ermedin Demirovic and Roland Sallai preferred up the top of late. The latter has shaken off a knock so should be fit to start. Petersen scored his fifth of the season last time out, a record-extending 27th substitute Bundesliga goal for the visitors.
Freiburg: Müller - Lienhart, Schlotterbeck, Gulde - Schmid, Santamaria, Höfler, Günter (c) - Sallai, Demirovic, Grifo
Out: Flekken (elbow), Itter (muscular)
Doubtful: Kübler (groin)
Coach: Christian Streich

Kramaric has an average of four shots per goal and he has scored six times in as many appearances against Freiburg so he is a reliable goalscoring treat and Hoffenheim with his goal can grab a valuable victory.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
