Hungary can enjoy the perfect end to a decent 2020 this Thursday when they entertain Iceland in Budapest.
Hungary has won three and drawn one of their five outings in 2020, including a 1-3 success at Bulgaria in the Semi-Final, and after Ferencvaros entered the group stage of the UCL, a win against Iceland could be a great reward for the revival of the Hungarian football in recent years. With a coveted berth in next summer’s tournament at stake, Marco Rossi's Hungary is the side with momentum behind them and that will be vital here against an Iceland outfit who has struggled on the main since the resumption of international football two months ago.
Rossi must decide whether to include Dominik Szoboszlai in a five-man midfield or allow the Red Bull Salzburg star to feature further forward. With Adam Szalai expected to take his place in attack, Rossi is left to choose between Nemanja Nikolic and Norbert Konyves. Hungary has a considerable list of injuries to account for and will have to do without Adam Kovacsik, Botond Barath, and Benjamin Babati in this game.
Hungary (3-5-2): Peter Gulacsi; Attila Szalai, Adam Lang, Willi Orban; Filip Holender, Dominik Szoboszlai, David Miklos Siger, Adam Nagy, Attila Fiola; Roland Sallai, Adam Szalai
Erik Hamren’s side had a tough task last time out with a 2-1 win at home to Romania to reach this Thursday’s showdown in Budapest, but they’ve been hopelessly outclassed and leaking goals. Iceland has lost all four of their Nations League fixtures with defeats coming against England, Belgium, and Denmark for the concession of 11 goals and they travel to Puskas Arena having won just two of their last 14 internationals on the road. Those victories came against minnows Andorra and Moldova, so the surprise packages of Euro 2016 simply can’t be fancied as a team in form at the moment.
Hamren could name the same Iceland XI which started the win over Romania on October 8. Kolbeinn Sigþorsson is an alternative to Alfred Finnbogason in the attack, assuming that Gylfi Sigurdsson continues to be used as a forward. Some decisions had to be made so experienced 73-cap midfielder Emil Hallfreðsson has not been included in the squad but defender Ragnar Sigurðsson is set to win his 97th cap for his country on Thursday. Iceland has a fully-fit squad at their disposal and will need all the resources to win this game.
Iceland (4-4-2): Hannes Halldorsson; Hordur Magnusson, Ragnar Sigurdsson, Kari Arnason, Victor Palsson; Arnor Traustason, Birkir Bjarnason, Aron Gunnarsson, Johann Gudmundsson; Alfred Finnbogason, Gylfi Sigurdsson

Hungary is an emerging force in European football after a few years of investment in infrastructure and building base through better league and clubs. Ferencvaros is in the UCL group stage, everybody is talking about football and they can use this momentum to take another step and find their place on the EURO. Home team win is our preferable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
