Leaders Inter Milan will need to be at their best in their pursuit of the Scudetto when they host Atalanta on Monday evening. Read our reasons for Inter vs Atalanta prediction and betting tips.
Antonio Conte maintained he is ‘a democratic coach’ and eager to create competition for places within his Inter squad, spurring Alexis Sanchez and Achraf Hakimi to give more, and won’t hide from Scudetto talk. The Nerazzurri needed a pair of Alexis Sanchez goals in the second half to conquer the Stadio Tardini, beating Parma 2-1. It allows them to go six points clear of Milan at the top of the Serie A table with their sixth consecutive victory. Conte knew it would be tough, which is why the only player he rested from his usual XI was Lautaro Martinez. “I don’t think it was an ugly game, as we scored two goals and had many other chances to extend our lead,” Conte told media. “Having said that, we know Parma always caused us problems, they have strong players and an excellent coach. They were trying to draw us out and then split us in two with knock-downs from Juraj Kucka. Parma deserves compliments and I think they have everything required to save themselves this season. I said that Genoa and Parma would be the test of our maturity because we needed to sharpen our talons and show determination in every fixture, not just the big ones. We conceded an avoidable goal, but other than that, I don’t think Samir Handanovic made many big saves.”
Inter are six points clear of Milan, with Juventus even further back, so are they running away with the Scudetto? “We are in a very good position, certainly a vast improvement from last season, but we also know every game is a battle and we can drop points against anyone. That is why we must never underestimate any opponent. We want to do our best. If our best means we are here at the end of the season, we’ll be very happy and proud, because it’ll mean we’ve made incredible leaps forward in a very short period.”
Antonio Conte has the luxury of a fully-fit squad to choose from, so should keep a regular side. Unfortunately for Alexis Sanchez - the match-winner versus Parma - it is expected that Lautaro Martinez will return in the attack, partnering the phenomenal Romelu Lukaku. Only Arturo Vidal, who is eyeing Christian Eriksen's new-found place in midfield, and Ashley Young - an outside contender to replace dynamic wing-back Ivan Perisic - can realistically harbor hopes of forcing their way into the first XI.
Inter: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Bastoni; Hakimi, Barella, Brozovic, Eriksen, Perisic; Martinez, Lukaku
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini said Josip Ilicic acted like ‘the professor’ he knows he can be against Crotone. The Orobici had an early scare with Crotone’s equalizer but soon ran riot with five goals to ruin Serse Cosmo’s debut. “In the first half, it seemed like a cursed match for the amount we produced,” Gasperini told media. “Then we showed that we are well and healthy. The goals were all of quality, we’ll try to continue this good moment. The table is tight; thus we can’t afford to relax.”
Robin Gosens scored the first goal of the match after 12 minutes and Gasperini praised the wing-back. “He’s doing well, he’s an extraordinary guy,” Gasperini continued. “He has added a scoring ability in the penalty area with both his head and his feet. He’s a sniper because he knows how to read the attacking phase well, making himself ready.” Atalanta can confidently prepare to face League leaders Inter on Monday. “There’s never an ideal moment, we know we are facing a very strong team that have changed gears,” the coach added. “Right now, they are showing they deserve this position even with a certain advantage, certainly concerning Madrid [in the Champions League]. It’s a good test.” Gasperini praised Josip Ilicic for having put down a ‘high-level’ performance. “He played at a high-level, he was very good,” Gasperini said and then joked: “If he trains consistently and doesn’t act like a grandmother, as I tell him now and then. When he is like this, I call him the professor.”
Atalanta has few injury issues regarding key personnel too, though first-choice wing-back Hans Hateboer will remain out of action for some time yet, so Joakim Maehle continues to cover his absence. Sparingly-used squad players Sam Lammers, Bosko Sutalo, and Viktor Kovalenko are doubtful for Monday, but none would be expected to start in any case. Speculation persists around whether Pierluigi Gollini will return in goal, after Marco Sportiello started the last two games, while Matteo Pessina, Josip Ilicic, and Duvan Zapata all expect to come into the side, having been benched against Crotone. Midfield mainstay Marten de Roon returns from suspension too, so Mario Pasalic and Ruslan Malinovskyi could therefore be among the men to miss out.
Atalanta: Gollini; Toloi, Romero, Djimsiti; Maehle, De Roon, Freuler, Gosens; Pessina; Muriel, Zapata

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
