On Tuesday night Inter Milan meets city rivals Milan in the second Derby Della Madonnina of the season, this time in the quarter-finals of Coppa Italia.
The frustration of realizing they could’ve been winter champions and threw it away, as Milan lost 3-0 to Atalanta, reflected out in the final minutes on Antonio Conte who received the red card confronting referee Fabio Maresca. They disagreed with the number of stoppages awarded, Conte was sent off for dissent, then it’s reported they continued to argue in the tunnel, with team manager Lele Oriali also dismissed. “The referee booked me and then chose to send me off. I thought four minutes weren’t enough, in the circumstances. Then the referee makes his decisions and we have to accept them, even if we do not agree with those decisions.”
Inter reach the midway stage of the season in second place, two points off leaders Milan, having failed to make the most of that slip-up with a goalless draw against Udinese. “As I always say, we need to think only of ourselves. We can’t think about Milan and their defeat. We just have to focus on improving our performances and results. We could’ve been more precise today and lacked quality in the final ball. When we put crosses in, we usually have four players push into the box. That’s usually the intent, then it’s about the accuracy of the cross. For instance, Nicolò Barella’s cross was what created the goal for Arturo Vidal against Juventus. You need both the cross and to get bodies into the box.”
There are usually many changes in the lineups for the Coppa Italia matches, but this is a big game that you don't want to lose. Danilo D'Ambrosio remains out of action, so the established back three-plus Samir Handanovic in goal - are set to stay unchanged. In midfield, Roberto Gagliardini or Stefano Sensi could potentially come into the XI, with Arturo Vidal the man in danger of dropping out. The Inter attack will be led once more by 'Lu-La': Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez.

It was a mixed day for the Rossoneri, as while they suffered their heaviest defeat of the season, falling 3-0 at home to Atalanta, they have also crowned winter champions for the first time in a decade. Stefano Pioli acknowledged Atalanta is a bogey team for Milan. “I think they are the only team we have been unable to beat. So clearly they make life difficult for us,” confessed Pioli to the media. “We had started well, we put lots of players into attack. It’s disappointing the way we conceded the opener on a set play, then the second goal closed the game. We had time, but were unable to find a way back into the match.’’
Milan has lost only two Serie A games this season, both at San Siro, to Juventus and Atalanta. “I think defeats to Juventus and Atalanta are nothing to be ashamed of. There are very high levels everywhere, so Atalanta was physically superior, more intense, winning all the duels and the second balls too. It’s a tight thing when you reach this level. We will analyze the defeat, try to see where we can improve, and focus on the next match.” In the last 26 seasons, the winter champions went on to take the Scudetto 19 times.
Milan coach Stefano Pioli's 4-2-3-1 setup will be without goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma behind it, so Ciprian Tatarusanu must deputize. Team captain Alessio Romagnoli will be back in the center of a defense and Fikayo Tomori is ready to join the squad, if not necessarily the starting lineup. Stand-in Pierre Kalulu is most likely to be benched. Influential duo Hakan Calhanoglu (COVID-19) and Ismael Bennacer (thigh strain) remain unavailable, so Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie should play in the midfield - with Alexis Saelemaekers, Rade Krunic, and Ante Rebic all available on the bench after returning from illness and injury last week.
AC Milan: Tatarusanu; Calabria, Romagnoli, Kjaer, Hernandez; Tonali, Kessie; Castillejo, Diaz, Leao; Ibrahimovic

Despite Milan's leading position in the league, it looks like Inter is playing better football in the big matches. Inter is a favorite to win the next city derby.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
