League-leading Inter Milan is trying to grab a tenth straight Serie A victory on Wednesday – as mid-table Sassuolo looks to surprise them and make Serie A more interesting at the top. Read our reasons for Inter vs Sassuolo prediction and betting tips.
Antonio Conte could not resist smiling as he spoke about Inter’s Scudetto chances. ‘We went close last season with the Europa League Final, but this time… we might get there.’ A lone Romelu Lukaku goal proved enough to conquer Bologna at the Stadio Dall’Ara and this is their ninth consecutive Serie A victory. The only time the Nerazzurri managed such a run was the record of 17 set in 2007 under Roberto Mancini. Above all, as Milan and Juventus were held to draws, Inter goes eight points clear with a game in hand to be played against Sassuolo on Wednesday. “Inevitably, as we get closer to the finish line, every victory weighs more and more,” Conte told the media. “Winning in Bologna against a team that plays good football and presses you hard, that was certainly a big step forward. Bologna did very well, they have an excellent coach in Sinisa Mihajlovic and it wasn’t easy. This was also a very long day for us, as we were in the hotel watching Milan’s game at lunch, then I watched Sassuolo against Roma. Juventus played just before us, so I didn’t see that one. It wasn’t easy playing after everyone else, especially after international duty, but the lads kept their focus and the right spirit. It was not to be taken for granted. I told the lads, this is a victory that we must follow up with Sassuolo on Wednesday.”
Conte refused to admit his hug on the touchline with director Lele Oriali or the audible celebrations in the locker room were for the title. “No, it cannot be a Scudetto celebration, because we have to earn that on the pitch and it needs to be mathematically certain. There are 10 games to go for us, nine for some others, and 27-30 points up for grabs. We know full well that Serie A is very difficult and every match is a battle to get the victory. The closer to we get to the finish line, the clearer we can see the prize at the end. Everyone is looking in that direction and we see it from a different angle to the others right now, but we still have it all to do. We’ve achieved nothing yet.”
Ivan Perisic is out again, having missed the weekend win over Bologna with an injury sustained while representing his country, so Ashley Young should continue on the left flank. Veteran defender Aleksandar Kolarov was also unavailable because of the injury, while Danilo D'Ambrosio has only just recovered from COVID-19. Coach Antonio Conte will be unable to call upon midfielder Marcelo Brozovic and center-back Alessandro Bastoni either, as both must serve a one-match ban for accumulation of bookings.
Inter Milan: Handanovic; Skriniar, De Vrij, Ranocchia; Hakimi, Barella, Eriksen, Gagliardini, Young; Martinez, Lukaku
Sassuolo coach Roberto De Zerbi praised captain Giacomo Raspadori’s performance in the 2-2 draw with Roma. ‘He has enormous potential'. The Neroverdi had left out two key players for the match against the Giallorossi, as Gian Marco Ferrari and Manuel Locatelli are in quarantine after returning from the Italy squad. The two players have tested negative but due to the coronavirus outbreak in the Azzurri team group, De Zerbi said Sassuolo decided to protect their camp. “Beyond how the game went, which was played very well by my team, it annoys us to be accused of giving little regularity to the championship for the choices we have made these days,” De Zerbi told the media. “From my point of view, we have behaved well. I don’t want to talk about how others behave, but being accused of distorting the championship was something that only we in football can question. So, I was very keen on this game.”
Giacomo Raspadori was given the captain’s armband on Saturday and scored the late equalizer to secure a point for the Neroverdi. “I already had it in my mind to give him the captaincy,” De Zerbi said. “He grew up here and I have a picture of him on my phone when he was a rookie with the captain’s armband. It’s a beautiful image for him and for the dreams that can be realized in football. I spoke to [Andrea] Consigli, who would be the captain, and [Francesco] Magnanelli, and I asked them for their opinion, and they agreed with my choice, so I had no doubts. You have to understand the path he will take. It must be said, but the goal against Roma may make it easier. Young people must be defended when they play badly, but not exalted when they play well. He’s certainly a player with enormous potential.”
Star strikers Domenico Berardi (thigh) and Francesco Caputo (back) are expected to be ruled out once again for Sassuolo, with midfielder Mehdi Bourabia (hamstring) and long-term injury absentee Filippo Romagna (knee) both unlikely to make their comebacks yet. Italy pair Gian Marco Ferrari and Manuel Locatelli have returned negative COVID-19 tests and will be considered for selection by Roberto De Zerbi. Scorer of the Neroverdi's opener against Roma, young Hamed Traore should continue in the first XI, given Berardi's absence, while winger Jeremie Boga must compete with Lukas Haraslin and versatile Filip Djuricic to keep his place.
Sassuolo: Consigli; Rogerio, Ferrari, Marlon, Toljan; Magnanelli, Locatelli; Djuricic, Lopez, Traore; Raspadori

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
