Last year's finalists Juventus await the arrival of Serie A strugglers Genoa on Wednesday, as they get their Coppa Italia campaign underway from the last-16 stage.
Andrea Pirlo credited his Juventus ‘hunger’ for pushing past 10-man Sassuolo. It was far from a comfortable evening for the Bianconeri, as they lost Dybala and McKennie to injury, then were made to push to the very end to beat Sassuolo, despite Pedro Obiang’s red card on the stroke of half-time. Danilo unleashed a rocket before Aaron Ramsey and Cristiano Ronaldo finally broke 10-man Sassuolo in a hard-fought game. Pedro Obiang saw red approaching half-time for his studs-up tackle on Federico Chiesa’s ankle. It took a ferocious strike from Danilo to break the deadlock, but Gregoire Defrel and his team would not give up, grabbing a deserved equalizer. Sassuolo even tried to win it, but Ramsey met a Gianluca Frabotta ball rolled across the six-yard box. Cristiano Ronaldo left it to the last second of the game to grab his goal, running on to a long Danilo ball.
Juventus visit San Siro again next weekend for a head-to-head with second-placed Inter. “These games are fascinating to play for everyone, they inevitably raise the concentration levels and the tension too. We are champions accustomed to this type of big match, so we’ll prepare after the Coppa Italia midweek.
Paulo Dybala and Weston McKennie picked up injuries at the weekend, while defensive trio Juan Cuadrado, Alex Sandro, and Matthijs de Ligt previously tested positive for COVID-19 and are self-isolating. In-form Federico Chiesa also suffered a knock against Sassuolo and is unlikely to start, as tactically versatile Pirlo could line up with a variant of his generally favored 4-4-2. Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon starts perhaps his final Coppa campaign behind a center-back pairing of Merih Demiral and Giorgio Chiellini, with Gianluca Frabotta continuing on the left. Due to Dybala being unavailable, Ronaldo may be required to start along with Morata.
Juventus (4-4-2): Gianluigi Buffon, Danilo, Giorgio Chiellini, Merih Demiral, Gianluca Frabotta, Dejan Kulusevski, Adrien Rabiot, Arthur, Federico Bernardeschi, Alvaro Morata, Cristiano Ronaldo
Davide Ballardini admitted Genoa ‘didn’t create much and did not play that well,’ but still did enough to earn the 2-0 win over Bologna. Miha Zajc and Mattia Destro made the most of the defensive errors to get the goals at Marassi, despite Bologna dominating possession as the away side. Ballardini was surprised by introducing youth team player Steeve Eboa Ebongue at half-time, he stole the ball and assisted for the second goal but then got substitute just after 29 minutes of his involvement in the game. “That’s how I saw it, the game developed in a certain way and I had to make adjustments. He wasn’t showing me that he was as focused as he had to be at that moment of the game. If a player isn’t concentrated and doesn’t seem to know what he is meant to do, the coach has to take action.”
Buffon's former Azzurri backup Federico Marchetti is generally Genoa's Coppa Italia goalkeeper, so Mattia Perin (on loan from Juventus) should be rested for the visiting side, who could be without both Luca Pellegrini and Goran Pandev on Wednesday. It will be interesting to see if Balardini chooses to rotate his squad, will he give a chance to reported Juventus target Sassuolo loanee Gianluca Scamacca, currently at Genoa. Juventus are aware of the valuation between €20-25m and are working to find a solution to bring the striker to the Allianz Stadium immediately. Parma and Bologna are interested in the Italy U21 international too, but Juventus are reportedly in pole position.
Genoa (3-5-2): Federico Marchetti, Mattia Bani, Ivan Radovanovic, Andrea Masiello, Davide Zappacosta, Valon Behrami, Milan Badelj, Miha Zajc, Domenico Criscito, Mattia Destro, Eldor Shomurodov

Even a second-string Juventus team is very capable to beat any Serie A side but also Genoa has a very good offensive threat with great tandem Destro – Shomurodov so both teams to score looks like a very reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
