Andrea Pirlo was emotionally exhausted after the comeback win over Udinese and praised the ‘determination and fight’ Juventus showed. The Bianconeri again put in a frankly poor performance at the Dacia Arena, barely creating any chances after they were caught out on a quickly-taken free-kick for Nahuel Molina’s goal. They were revitalized by a penalty for Rodrigo De Paul’s avoidable handling offense, then Cristiano Ronaldo nodded in at the back post to complete the turnaround. “This victory arrived with determination and fight. We once again made life complicated for ourselves, but we wanted to bring home the result right to the end and that’s what is important,” Pirlo told the media. “It was particularly crucial considering the other results. This is a group, it’s strong, it wants to fight for its targets and we never lacked that. Sometimes the attitude during games was not worthy of Juventus, but the final embrace was a show of our unity. Now we need to continue with this spirit.”
Pirlo is usually so controlled, but his run to hug his teammates at the goal and his exhaustion in the post-match interview suggests he’s feeling the strain of being a coach. “I thought it’d be a bit less stressful and emotional, but when you win games like this at the end, it gives you the energy to keep going.” Napoli and Atalanta were held to draws, while Milan and Lazio won this weekend, so Juve is now a joint second with La Dea and Rossoneri. “There’s fatigue, both physical and mental, so when you’re used to challenging for the Scudetto and not the Champions League, something changes. We have adapted, it’s a struggle, but we need to get there.”

Stefano Pioli explained what Zlatan Ibrahimovic brings other than goals to Milan and why Hakan Calhanoglu has ‘not reached his maximum potential.’ The Rossoneri badly needed a boost after back-to-back defeats against Sassuolo and Lazio, especially as they go head-to-head with Juventus. Calhanoglu got the early goal against Benevento, then Theo Hernandez followed up a save on Zlatan Ibrahimovic for his first Serie A goal of 2021. “Without a team spirit, we wouldn’t get anywhere. We are a strong team, but not strong enough to get away with lacking the basics. “We had some situations in recent weeks that penalized us, but I saw a good performance this evening,” the coach told the media.
The return of Zlatan Ibrahimovic was certainly felt, even if he didn’t get on the scoresheet. “Ibrahimovic is a champion and a champion makes everyone around him raise their game. Missing him was certainly damaging to the team, but we have reacted to the difficulties and showed character. It’s an advantage not to give the opposition defense a regular point to focus on, so Zlatan has this great tactical intelligence and knows how to move around trying to find the space.”
There were more one-touch passes and movement off the ball than Milan has seen recently, especially with the opening goal. “This was a particularly important match, as we cannot deny that not getting the full points tonight would’ve been damaging to us. We realized that we have to take the initiative and play the ball quicker. What I do think we need to do now is be a little more solid when the opponents have the ball, getting back into position and closing the spaces.”
Milan (4-2-3-1): G Donnarumma; Calabria, Kjaer, Tomori, Theo; Kessie, Bennacer; Saelemaekers, Calhanoglu, Rebic; Ibrahimovic

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
