Juventus host relegation troubled Parma on Wednesday, with their top-four place for the Champions League in danger after a weekend defeat against Atalanta. Read our reasons for Juventus vs Parma prediction and betting tips.
Andrea Pirlo insisted Juventus ‘played the match we needed to’ in their 1-0 defeat to Atalanta and he is confident they’ll have ‘no problem’ qualifying for the Champions League. The Bianconeri dropped down to fourth place and it could be fifth tonight if Napoli manages to beat Inter at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Ruslan Malinovskyi’s deflected shot-off Alex Sandro proved decisive at the 87th minute in Bergamo. “It was a good game against a strong team. We played the match we needed to, then they were lucky with the late goal, but we played with great determination and aggression. It’s disappointing, we could’ve brought home at least a point,” Pirlo told the media. Paulo Dybala had his first start in three months but made very little impact at the Gewiss Stadium. “He hadn’t started in a long time, so facing a physical side like Atalanta meant he couldn’t possibly do 90 minutes. He did well as long as his physique held up. Federico Chiesa and Danilo had a few problems during the week too. Some were struggling a bit, but Ronaldo was not in a condition to play.”
Despite the defeat, Pirlo was impressed with the Juventus performance against Atalanta, who they will face again in the Coppa Italia Final on May 19. “We have not faced all our games with the same attitude and determination. It’s a completely different team when we have those elements, but despite me pointing it out, we have dropped too many points by not having the right attitude in the smaller fixtures. We knew Atalanta would make it a duel all over the field, so that’s how we prepared it. We kept good possession, covered the spaces, Atalanta can force you to play differently to other situations, but we did well.”
Juventus top scorer and Capocannoniere leader Cristiano Ronaldo suffered a thigh injury last week so sat out the loss to Atalanta, with the rare prospect of the evergreen striker missing back-to-back matches a very real prospect on Wednesday. Winger Federico Bernardeschi is expected to remain absent with COVID-19 and both Weston McKennie - who picked up a back injury on Sunday - and Federico Chiesa (taken off with a thigh problem) is in doubt. Dejan Kulusevski is therefore expected to come in for Chiesa on the left of Andrea Pirlo's flexible 4-4-2, with the versatile Danilo set to start at full-back after getting over a toe injury. In Cristiano Ronaldo's absence, Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata would again start upfront.
Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, De Ligt, Chiellini, Sandro; Cuadrado, Bentancur, Rabiot, McKennie; Morata, Dybala
Parma coach Roberto D’Aversa acknowledged they are ‘throwing an entire season away and it’s our fault’ after going from 3-2 up to losing 4-3 at Cagliari in stoppages. This was the last chance saloon for the relegation battle and the Ducali seemed to have all the aces, going 2-0 up, then 3-2 up, and leading at the 90th minute. Instead, as we’ve seen so many times already, Parma threw it away in stoppages. “This defeat will remain unforgettable. It seems impossible we were leading, we had the chance to take the lead again in stoppages and inexplicably lost,” D’Aversa told the media. “We keep having these black-outs that compromise the entire match. A team playing for its life cannot afford to give away these goals and fail to convert these chances. We had five defenders in stoppages but allowed four crosses, so evidently, Cagliari did better than us.”
Juraj Kucka went off at half-time with a muscular problem and Parma lost their way after that. “Kucka is an important player, he gives you experience, character, and quality. He had a cramp, so did Giuseppe Pezzella. We don’t want to blame those who came off the bench, but the facts show our game got worse when the substitutions started for both teams. Cagliari’s players came on and they were more determined, ours came on and we lost control of the match. Maybe we just don’t understand what we need to bring home as a result. Analyzing all the games, even before I arrived, seems to be the difference. When I was here last season, we could go two days and not concede, because we were so determined and gritty that we would lock everything out. You pay for mistakes at this level and we at Parma have to acknowledge we are throwing an entire season away and it’s our fault.”
Parma midfielder Juraj Kucka suffered a thigh strain, having scored in a losing cause last time out, and may not be ready to start in Turin, while Riccardo Gagliolo (calf), Roberto Inglese (ankle), Simone Iacoponi (knee), and Wylan Cyprien (tendon tear) are among those certainly unavailable to Roberto D'Aversa. Both Milan loanee Andrea Conti and Brazilian midfielder Hernani are struggling to make the squad too, as D'Aversa is expected to once again turn to veteran striker Graziano Pelle to lead the line - with Andreas Cornelius (one goal in 22 games) dropping out. Former Roma star Gervinho could come in for Kucka.
Parma: Sepe; Laurini, Bani, Osorio, Pezzella; Grassi, Brugman, Kurtic; Man, Pelle, Gervinho

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
