After they failed to win at the weekend Juventus hosts Spezia at the Allianz Stadium in very important mid-week Serie A action on Tuesday night. Read our reasons for Juventus vs Spezia prediction and betting tips.
Andrea Pirlo blamed a lack of experience for Juventus fumbling the lead in a 1-1 draw with Hellas Verona. ‘They press you all over the pitch.’ The Bianconeri dropped points again and now risk falling a long way off leaders Inter, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s opener was canceled out by an Antonin Barak header. Juve started very aggressively but seemed to run out of steam as the game wore on, and Wojciech Szczesny fingertipped two efforts onto the woodwork. “It’s disappointing, as we knew it would be a difficult and hard-fought game. We managed to take the lead, which was the most difficult part, then didn’t keep hold of it,” Pirlo told media. “There are these small details that unfortunately young players don’t understand can make the difference and lead to points. When you are in front, you must try to bring these games home. We were missing a lot of experienced players, so the younger elements didn’t understand the way the match was going. I asked Cristiano and Alex Sandro to speak to them and make their voices heard, but it wasn’t enough.”
Missing so many defenders and using Alex Sandro as a center-back, did Pirlo think about moving to a four-man defense? “I thought about moving to four at the back, but I looked to the bench and didn’t have the options to change. I saw some players who were starting to get tired after the hour mark, but that was to be expected. We planned a 3-4-2-1 with Aaron Ramsey and Dejan Kulusevski behind Ronaldo, so we’d press their center-backs and support Ronaldo. In the second half, we no longer had the energy to keep pressing them and the spaces opened up for Verona. We know the intensity of Verona forces you to use up a lot of energy, and we are playing many games in quick succession, there aren’t enough players, so fatigue is going to be an issue. Hellas press you all over the pitch, so you have to think quickly before the ball reaches you to check where your teammates are and can make the pass before they close you down. We had the chance to extend our lead, it’s just a pity we didn’t hold on to that advantage. We don’t have strikers who can just hold up the ball, so we need to play out from the back. It was tough today, as Verona pressed high, and the pitch wasn’t in the best condition either.”
Injury-plagued Paulo Dybala remains out of action for the hosts with an ongoing knee ligament issue, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci, and Juan Cuadrado are all expected to miss out again due to injury, full-back Danilo returns from suspension and should replace Federico Bernardeschi in the lineup, as Pirlo reverts to a four-man defense after fielding a trio last time out. Despite a lack of goals, Dejan Kulusevski should continue to support Cristiano Ronaldo upfront, as Alvaro Morata is still suffering from the effects of an intestinal illness. Aaron Ramsey is under pressure from Weston McKennie to keep his place in midfield, with former Barcelona man Arthur remaining doubtful.
Juventus: Szczesny; Danilo, Demiral, de Ligt, Sandro; Chiesa, Bentancur, Rabiot, Ramsey; Kulusevski, Ronaldo
Spezia coach Vincenzo Italiano explained why they struggle more against Parma than Milan, while he warns against suggesting they are safe. 'I was twice relegated with 39 points...' His team fought back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 with Parma thanks to an Emmanuel Gyasi brace but repeated the trend of having a better record against the clubs in the top half of the table. “We had started the way we did the second half against Fiorentina, too sluggish, but quality pays off eventually and we clawed it back for a draw,” Italiano told media. “With a little more determination in front of goal, we could’ve scored a third, but I congratulate my lads because drawing in those circumstances was not easy. Our movement on the second goal was very strange and I don’t understand what happened. Fortunately, we were able to make up for it.”
This was the same starting XI that beat Milan 2-0, yet was trailing Parma 2-0 and only managed a 2-2 draw. “Against the very big clubs, we are forced to approach the game in a certain way. In others, when we have the initiative and the opposition defend and counter, perhaps we’re not as effective. I know full well what can happen in Serie A, because I twice as a player was relegated with 39 points, having managed a wonderful first half to the season. So don’t tell me Spezia is safe with 25 points and I can assure you my players will always be concentrated to the end. It was my Verona in 2001-02, I still wake up thinking about it, even 20 years later. We had Adrian Mutu, Mauro Camoranesi, Alberto Gilardino, Paolo Cannavaro, Massimo Oddo…”
Visiting coach Vincenzo Italiano welcomed top scorer M'Bala Nzola back versus Parma, after more than a month's absence, so the powerful frontman should be set to regain his starting spot, with 'false nine' Kevin Agudelo making way or perhaps switching to the flank. Tommaso Pobega will compete with current rival Nahuel Estevez for one of Spezia's three midfield slots - if the Milan loanee can return to fitness in time - though Riccardo Marchizza, Juan Ramos, and Federico Mattiello all missed out at the weekend are not expected to return yet.
Spezia: Provedel; Vignali, Terzi, Erlic, Bastoni; Estevez, Ricci, Maggiore; Agudelo, Nzola, Gyasi

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
