France is seeking their first win in Group D of the qualifiers as they visit the Astana Arena for a clash against Kazakhstan. Read our reasons for Kazakhstan vs France prediction and betting tips.
Kazakhstan was not in action in midweek, so Sunday’s clash will be their first outing in the qualifiers. Their last fixture was a 2-1 home defeat against Lithuania in the UEFA Nations League back in November. Goals from Modestas Vorobjovas and Arvydas Novikovas helped the visitors complete a comeback victory. The squad is made up predominantly of domestic players, although there are eight foreign-based footballers on the list. Talgat Baysufunov's men are currently on a poor run of results and are winless in their last six matches with four defeats in that run. They also struggle on their patch with four defeats in their last five home matches. Kazakhstan will recognize their limitations and sit in a low-block position to frustrate France - much like Ukraine did on Wednesday.
Kazakhstan midfielder Islambek Kuat was given his marching orders last time out against Lithuania, but the 28-year-old has not been selected for the squad either way. Artur Shushenachev would have hoped to earn his debut for the national team this month, but an injury has prevented the Kairat forward from linking up with the team for March's fixtures. CSKA Moscow's Baktiyar Zaynutdinov will carry in the attack - he scored 7 goals in 16 appearances for his country - and another one would see him move to join third in the all-time top scorer charts for Kazakhstan alongside Sergei Khizhnichenko, who has not cut.
Kazakhstan: Pokatilov; Alip, Marochkin, Erlanov; Beysebekov, Abiken, Zaynutdinov, Tagybergen, Shomko; Aymbetov, Fedin
Les Bleus could only manage a 1-1 draw with Ukraine during their opening qualifier, with a Presnel Kimpembe's own goal canceling out Antoine Griezmann’s first-half opener. France's draw with Ukraine followed consecutive victories over Sweden and Portugal in their final two UEFA Nations League fixtures last year. The reigning world champions remain unbeaten in their last 14 competitive matches dating back to a 2-0 loss to Turkey in June 2019 and will be confident of another victory here given Kazakhstan’s poor competitive record. Antoine Griezmann has scored in each of his last three appearances for club and country, while he has four goals in his last eight caps for France. Les Bleus have lost just four of their last 42 World Cup qualifiers and are unbeaten in their last 14 competitive matches. Didier Deschamps’ side has taken the lead inside the opening 20 minutes in three of their last four competitive games.
In a huge blow to Deschamps and France, N'Golo Kante has sustained a hamstring injury and will play no part in their next two matches, so Paul Pogba will hope to grasp his opportunity in midfield. The Bleus manager admitted that Mbappe did not play well before he was substituted on Wednesday - with some surprised that the Paris Saint-Germain forward started after an injury scare - so he could be rested here as Ousmane Dembele looks to impress. Rotation should be on the cards before a more daunting clash with Bosnia, so Anthony Martial, Lucas Digne, and Leo Dubois are in contention to feature from the first whistle here.
France: Lloris; Dubois, Varane, Lenglet, Digne; Pogba, Rabiot; Dembele, Griezmann, Coman; Martial

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
