Faroe Iceland football champions KI Klaksvik meet Slovakian dominant force Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday evening at Injector Arena in Klaksvik for the 1st qualifying round of the UEFA Champions League.
KÍ Klaksvík is an 18-time Faroe Islands champion and a 6-time domestic cup winner. They won the league with a three-point lead over B36 Tórshavn. At present, the new 2020 season is in full swing, which, due to climatic conditions, is played by the spring - autumn system.
KÍ Klaksvík is currently in the second spot in the current season with a balance of 12 victories, 2 draws, and 2 losses. Their current run of results is impressive. They won the last five games with an impressive 21-0 aggregate. In the previous season, Klaksvík played the qualifiers of the UEL. In the preliminary round, they went easily pass the Tre Fiori from San Marino with 5-1 and 4-0 wins. In the following round, Klaksvik eliminated Riteriai from Lithuania on away goal rule with a 1-1 aggregate score after two games. Their more than decent run stopped because of the Swiss Lucerne, with two 1-0 defeats.
They are typical represents of classic Nordic football style with a lot of running and power aerial duels. They scouted well Slovan because Montenegrin footballer Boris Došljak got a few advice from Sutjeska players that were better than the team from Bratislava in last season qualifiers for the UCL: They know their advantages and disadvantages they will try to exploit the home pitch and took control of the ball from Slovan.
Klaksvik plays differently in the domestic championship and in Europe. In the Faroe league, they dictate the rhythm and play 90 minutes offensively but in Europe that is not the case because the opponents are much stronger. They hope that their top scorers can do the damage, Joannes Bjartalíð, and Ole Erik Mitskogen.
Slovan is the most dominant team in Slovakia with the most titles in both league and cup in the country and they were successful in both competitions in the last season. They opened the year very badly with 1st round qualifying loss for the Group stage of the UCL vs Sutjeska Nikšić after penalties but after they dismissed the coach they went on a great run in domestic matches and the UEFA Europa League.
Slovan won in the next five consecutive games in qualifiers and reached the Group stage of the UEL. They had a tough draw and finished with four points from six games with Wolves, Braga and Bešiktaš. They sold best striker and goalscorer Šporar to Sporting Lisbon but that didn't disturb them to be first in the league with 10 points more than second-placed Žilina when the season ended because of the coronavirus pandemic.
They began a new campaign on a high note with two 5-0 wins vs Nitra and Michalovce but in the third round, they were defeated 2-1 in a match with Zlate Moravce. That was their first loss after the whole calendar year and exactly 22 matches. Slovenian Alen Ožbolt was the only scorer after beautiful action that finished with his nice header. Problems were detected on both sides of the team because they were very clumsy and out of focus in the final third and on the other end they allowed two goals from two shots. Now they must find a way to forget that loss and win on Faroe Iceland.
A year ago, there was certain euphoria after the draw and it turned out very badly vs Sutjeska, a rival from Montenegro that they undervalued. This time that won't happen and Slovan got as much information as possible, regarding all aspects of the game, like playing on the artificial grass and colder weather.
Slovan has a big roster with many players that can play in better leagues. Footballers like Moha or Nono will make a difference with any rival and Slovenian strikers Medved and Ožbolt will be in the middle of the attention in the adversary's penalty box.

Slovan is a big favorite to win this game but Klaksvik showed in recent years that they can be a hard team to break. The club from Bratislava is eager to show their worth and book a place in the Group stage of the UCL and they must be convincing on this far trip.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
