Koln escaped from relegation in the last game of the season and now they are trying to start a new one on a high note. Hertha added real quality to their roster with Kevin-Prince Boateng and Stevan Jovetić so the Sunday match could be the start of something big for the Berlin team. Read our Koln vs Hertha prediction and betting tips.
Koln played relegation play-offs in the last season and showed their true quality in the last match of their campaign. Against Holstein Kiel, the team that eliminated Bayern Munich from the DFB Cup in the last season, they won 5-1 as visitors and concluded the turbulent season in the best possible way. On the tide of that high confidence, they showed quality once more in the preseason match against Bundesliga champions where they won 3-2. That was some kind of a dream start for new coach Steffen Baumgart who will have almost the same team as in the last season.
Team captain Jonas Hector is still there, he will be happy to stay healthy this time around, because the major part of the last season he was sidelined with injuries. With him or without him, this team just isn’t the same, because his quality can be used in several roles and multiple formations. They will add some power in attack after comebacks of Mark Uth and Anthony Modeste from loans, so goals shouldn’t be a problem as in last season. Koln had some problems at the weekend, they needed extra time and penalties to get the better of fourth-tier outfit Carl-Zeiss Jena in the DFB Cup.
Koln: T. Horn - Ehizibue, Hübers, Czichos, Schmitz - Ozcan - Thielmann, Hector (c), Kainz - Duda, Uth
Out: J. Horn (hip)

Coach: Steffen Baumgart
Hertha had an excellent transfer period and they should be much better in the upcoming season. They added some individual qualities through the likes of Kevin-Prince Boateng, Stevan Jovetić, Suat Serdar, and Marco Richter. Boateng is an all-rounder that can be still used in several roles, despite his veteran years, Montenegrin striker Stevan Jovetic is just one of the three players with experience in five big European leagues and if he stays healthy he could be in the headlines every weekday. He showed his quality already in the preseason with two goals against Liverpool. David Selke returned from Bremen and he should be starting number 9 in the premier match.
Pal Dardai turned around Hertha’s season after Bruna Labadia was dismissed and as an ex-Hertha player he knows what he should get from players that were representing the team in the last season. From time to time they were playing some wonderful football and Matheus Cunha, golden with the Brasilian squad in Olympics should be also the man to watch as he provided 7 goals and 6 assists in the previous season. Dodi Lukebakio will give them speed and skill and when Piatek returns from injury that will be a very quality roster. The 1-0 win over third division side Meppen in the first round of the cup didn’t show much but on Sunday they should be able to perform on a high level.
Hertha: Schwolow - Pekarik, Stark (c), M. Dardai, Plattenhardt - Boateng, Ascacibar, Serdar - Lukebakio, Jovetic - Selke
Out: Jarstein (match fitness)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Pal Dardai

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
