Koln clinched their play-off berth in dramatic circumstances at the weekend, with Sebastiaan Bornauw's goal earning them a 1-0 win over Schalke which, combined with Werder Bremen's 4-2 defeat at home to Borussia Mönchengladbach, saw the Billy Goats leapfrog the Green-Whites into 16th place. Earlier on in a gripping final day of action, Sebastian Andersson thought he would be Koln's hero when he scored, only to see the goal chalked off after a VAR review. A knee injury has ruled him out of playing a part in Wednesday's first leg, however, with Ondrej Duda – Koln’s top-scorer this season with seven, equal with Elvis Rexhbecaj – set to lead the attack alone. Captain Hector has been an inspiration in a more advanced midfield role, and he will likely line up there again as coach Friedhelm Funkel looks to complete a great escape, after spending the last six games of the season in an automatic relegation berth, right up to the final four minutes of the season.
Funkel has previously contested the play-off in charge of Bochum. On that occasion, in 2010/11 he was seeking promotion but lost 2-1 over two legs to Borussia Mönchengladbach. He has also previously been relegated with Koln in 2001/02. Inaugural winners of the Bundesliga and three-time champions, the Billy Goats are looking to avoid dropping out of the top flight for the seventh time - all in the last 25 years. Koln has won one (4-0 h) and drawn one (1-1 a) of the two previous meetings between these sides in the 2018/19 Bundesliga 2 campaign.

Kiel will have had 24 hours less time to prepare for this play-off, and they come into the game in a contrasting psychological frame of mind to their hosts. While joy and relief prevailed for Koln at the weekend, regret was the leading emotion as Holstein threw away an automatic promotion berth on the final day of the Bundesliga 2 season. A win over Darmstadt would have taken them up together with Bochum, but Ole Werner's side squandered a 1-0 lead to go down to a 3-2 defeat. Janni Serra had given them that lead with his 15th goal of the season, and the 23-year-old will be asked to continue his scoring record of six in his last eight games when Kiel arrives at the RheinEnergieSTADION.
Captain Hauke Wahl - scorer of a dramatic late equalizer in the DFB Cup win over Bayern Munich earlier in the year - will stand at the heart of the meanest defense in Bundesliga 2 this season, while former Bremen midfielder Bartels will look to keep a little bit of a northern legacy in the Bundesliga next season. A fixture backlog means this first leg is Kiel's 10th game in the space of 33 days. Champions of Germany in 1912, Kiel are yet to play in the Bundesliga but featured in the 2017/18 play-off, when they lost 4-1 on aggregate to Wolfsburg.
