Leon Bailey is in red-hot form as Bayer Leverkusen make the short journey to Koln on Wednesday.
Koln hopes to be able to welcome back club captain Jonas Hector for the visit of Bailey and Leverkusen - arguably the most in-form player and club in the Bundesliga at the moment. Hector has not played since the 1-0 loss to Arminia Bielefeld on Matchday 2 after suffering whiplash. The recently-retired Germany international returned to team training last week and was expected to feature on Saturday, but he withdrew himself from the matchday squad which went on to beat Mainz 1-0. Koln ended a club record 20 games without a clean sheet by shutting out Mainz at the weekend.
It was their second win in three games, and one which has put daylight between them and the relegation battle below. Ondrej Duda was sent off at the Opel Arena and will be suspended for this regional derby. The Slovak has been deputizing in the attack, helping himself to two goals and two assists, so Sebastian Andersson's return from a knee injury is particularly timely. Coach Markus Gisdol is expected to keep most of the rest of the team the same, with the recent switch to a three-man defense reaping rewards.
They have won just 25% of their games against Leverkusen (16 of 64), with just three of those coming in their last 14 meetings on home soil, although two of those were their last two encounters in December 2019 and March 2018 (both 2-0).
Koln: T. Horn (c) - Cestic, Bornauw, J. Horn - Skhiri - Wolf, Özcan, Rexhbecaj, Jakobs - Andersson, Thielmann
Out: Czichos (groin), Duda (suspended), Ehizibue (not included), Kainz (knee)
Doubtful: Hector (neck)
Coach: Markus Gisdol
They will need to be at their best to keep Leverkusen at bay. Peter Bosz's side surged to the top of the Bundesliga standings on Sunday with a 4-1 thrashing of Hoffenheim. Bailey scored twice at the weekend, lifting his season tally to nine goals and six assists in all competitions. Florian Wirtz - a Koln youth academy player - was also on target at the BayArena. If there is a glimmer of hope for the hosts, it perhaps lies in how thinly-stretched Leverkusen are in terms of personnel.
Captain Charles Aranguiz and defender Sven Bender lead a lengthy list of injury absentees, making rotation more difficult. Lucas Alario came off the bench to score against Hoffenheim and could be preferred to Patrik Schick upfront, but the rest of the team has rather picked itself of late. Lars Bender's only Bundesliga brace came in Koln, in a 2-0 win on 25 February 2012.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender (c), Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Baumgartlinger, Amiri - Bailey, Schick, Diaby
Out: Aranguiz (Achilles tendon), Arias (ankle), S. Bender (knee), Palacios (back), Paulinho (knee)
Doubtful: Demirbay (not included)
Coach: Peter Bosz

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
