Koln must be ready to protect the counterattacks when they welcome VfB Stuttgart to the RheinEnergieStadion on Saturday.
Max Meyer has so far only played one minute across three games since he returned to the Bundesliga with Koln in January, while team captain Jonas Hector’s injury woes this season have continued after missing the last two matches. While that saw a huge derby win away at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Billy Goats were left with a Carnival hangover last weekend as they slipped to a 2-0 defeat at in-form Eintracht Frankfurt.
Koln is still placed in the dangerous spot, only three points above the relegation play-off place, where Arminia Bielefeld has a game in hand. Markus Gisdol’s side did, though, beat Bielefeld in their last game at the RheinEnergieStadion to end a club-record run of home games without a win. Marius Wolf got a brace that day but was training individually earlier in the week after an ankle problem. Should he not be fit for Saturday, Kingsley Ehizibue is set to deputize. Ondrej Duda went off at half-time against Frankfurt after starting the game with a rib injury, but he too is expected to be ready.
Koln: T. Horn (c) - Cestic, Mere, Czichos - Wolf, Skhiri, Özcan, Jakobs - Duda, Rexhbecaj - Dennis
Out: Andersson (knee), Bornauw (back), Kainz (knee)
Doubtful: Hector (thigh)
Coach: Markus Gisdol
Stuttgart has found 2021 tough going with only two wins since the turn of the year but did bounce back from a 5-2 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen with a 1-1 draw at home to Hertha Berlin last time out. Sasa Kalajdzic got the goal again that day in the absence of Nicolas Gonzalez, meaning the Austrian has four of the team’s last five in the league, and nine for the campaign. The other was claimed by Silas Wamangituka, who remains VfB’s top scorer with 11.
Club captain Gonzalo Castro has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury he sustained on his 400th Bundesliga appearance against Mainz, but is back in training and again available for Pellegrino Matarazzo. Centre-back Marc-Oliver Kempf is also fit again after missing last week through illness as the promoted side aim to cut the four-point gap to the top half of the table.
Stuttgart: Kobel - Mavropanos, Anton, Kempf - Silas, Mangala, Endo, Sosa - Castro (c), Thommy - Kalajdzic
Out: Churlinov (broken nose), Egloff (ankle), Gonzalez (hamstring), Mola (hip)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Pellegrino Matarazzo

Koln was winless in an unwanted club record 14 Bundesliga home matches before downing Bielefeld 3-1 on Matchday 19, but have not beaten Stuttgart on their ground since October 2000 (D5, L5). Both teams to score is our the most preferable betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
