Koln has some goalkeeping issues to solve before Max Kruse-led Union Berlin visits them on Sunday.
Ron-Robert Zieler or Timo Horn, that is the question for Koln coach Markus Gisdol. Zieler made his first appearance for hometown club in their 1-1 draw at Werder Bremen before the international break. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper came on for Timo Horn in the first half, who left the game with a back injury. Horn returned to team training at the start of this week and should be fit to start once again for the visit of Union on Sunday. Koln is still waiting to keep a clean sheet this season and to end their near-club-record run of 17 games without a win. One more would be a negative club record.
Target man Sebastian Andersson - who scored 12 goals for Union last season in his and their first-ever Bundesliga campaign - will be Koln's biggest goalscoring threat, looking to add to his two goals so far this term. Markus Gisdol is still waiting on the return of club captain Jonas Hector, as well as Anthony Modeste and Benno Schmitz, while Florian Kainz is a long-term absentee. Hector recently retired from international duty with 43 Germany caps to his name. He has 19 goals and 18 assists in 255 appearances for Koln.
Koln: T. Horn (c) - Wolf, Bornauw, Czichos, J. Horn - Skhiri - Limnios, Duda, Özcan, Jakobs - Andersson
Out: Kainz (knee)
Doubtful: Hector (neck), Modeste (back), Schmitz (ankle)
Coach: Markus Gisdol
While Koln has begun to suffer from some second-season syndrome, Union has experienced no such issues in their second-ever Bundesliga campaign. This is the Berlin club's best-ever start as they sit fifth in the table on a six-match unbeaten run. Max Kruse has been the biggest reason for their recent form. Only Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski was more involved than Kruse's (three goals, five assists) in 2020/21. His penalty in the 5-0 win over Bielefeld last Saturday was his 16th consecutive converted spot-kick in the Bundesliga, drawing him level with the record Jochen Abel set with Schalke in the 1980s. The former Werder Bremen man is helping to forget about Anderson's departure to Koln in the summer. The 32-year-old should continue in his No.10 role for Urs Fischer, behind Taiwo Awoniyi, with the Liverpool-owned man set to deputize for the injured Joel Pohjanpalo. Union is the league's second-highest scorers this season behind Bayern. The capital club will be without Keita Endo, Christian Gentner, and Nico Schlotterbeck for the time being.
Like Gisdol, Urs Fisher has a goalkeeping dilemma. Union keepers Loris Karius and Andreas Luthe could barely be closer statistically. Karius has saved 74 percent of shots on his goal across his Bundesliga career; Luthe 73 percent. Karius is without appearances after his loan from Liverpool that could be terminated in January because of lack of matches.
Union: Luthe - Trimmel (c), Friedrich, Knoche, Lenz - Prömel, Andrich - Becker, Kruse, Ingvartsen - Awoniyi
Out: Endo (thigh), Gentner (muscular), Pohjanpalo (ankle), Schlotterbeck (thigh)
Doubtful: Bülter (not included), Ujah (knee)
Coach: Urs Fischer

Koln plays better football than the results show. Their level of performance is good but they need to find a way to win games. Union is full of confidence, and as in last season, they are not giving their rivals an inch of the free space. Should be an interesting game with both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
