Lazio is fresh from a convincing display in Europe and aims to bounce back from a poor start in Serie A when Bologna arrives at the Olimpico on Saturday night.
Lazio has been slow out of the blocks in Serie A, taking just four points from their opening four games to lie down in 15th. Ciro Immobile should return to the starting line-up after his suspension in the surprising 3-0 defeat to Sampdoria last time and could be paired with Vedat Muriqi from the first minute for the first time. Lazio needed some time to get going in 2019-20 as well, are expected to fight at the top of Serie A this season, but after a run of three games without a win, the alarm bells have started ringing at Formello. Simone Inzaghi’s men were back in their best shape against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on Tuesday and hope the impressive performance can translate to the League this weekend.
Ciro Immobile scored one and created another for Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro, while Luiz Felipe’s header was deflected in, as Lazio stunned Borussia Dortmund 3-1 in their Champions League comeback. The Biancocelesti made their return to the Champions League after 13 years, but confidence was low following one point from their last three Serie A games.
It was a huge transformation for a side that lost 3-0 to Sampdoria on Saturday.
“At least we learned an important lesson from the defeat. Tucu Correa and Immobile worked so hard for the team and allowed us to keep our positions, so it was inevitable they’d be a little tired when finishing, as they were extraordinary and never stopped running. Luiz Felipe is a very important player for us and I started him in a Champions League debut against Erling Haaland and Jadon Sancho, despite the fact he had just one real training session. He had this nasty ankle sprain in a pre-season friendly and was out for 37 days. Sergej Milinkovic-Savic requested a substitution, as he had a bruise on his hip. He was in pain and hopefully, it’s just a knock’’, said Simone Inzaghi after the game.
Senad Lulic, Stefan Radu, and new boy Andreas Pereira are uncertain for the match, as Patric, Luiz Felipe, and Acerbi are expected to start, as Pepe Reina could take place in goal for the Biancocelesti. Luis Alberto and Lucas Leiva seem set for a place in the middle, as Akpa Akpro could keep Sergej Milinkovic-Savic out.
Lazio (3-5-2): Reina; Patric, Luiz Felipe, Acerbi; Marusic, Akpa Akpro, Leiva, Luis Alberto, Fares; Muriqi, Immobile
Suspended: none
Injured: Lulic, Radu, Pereira
Sinisa Mihajlovic’s men arrive with a host of players out, as Mitchel Dijks, Gary Medel, Andrea Poli, Andreas Skov Olsen, and Lorenzo De Silvestri are all struggling, and the confidence at the Rossoblu is low with only three points on the board from four games. Bologna hasn’t won in 14 games against Lazio, the last time was in a 3-1 win at the Olimpico on March 11, 2012.
The convincing 4-1 win over Parma in Serie A Week 2 seems a long time ago, as they lost away to newly-promoted Benevento and Sassuolo got away from the Renato Dall’Ara with a 4-3-win last time.
Bologna boss Sinisa Mihajlovic insists his side didn’t have a physical drop in their 4-3 home defeat against Sassuolo who recovered from two goals down.
"The game changed when we were leading 3-1. We had two opportunities in the area and we could close the game. We didn’t, we allowed a goal in numerical inferiority and then we deflated. We had the strength to fight back, but we couldn’t score the equalizer. The episodes, unfortunately, did not go well. We scored goals and created more opportunities, we deserved four points if not six in the last two games and we go home with zero points. We must not lose self-confidence and trust and stay calm.''
Bologna (4-2-3-1): Skorupski; De Silvestri, Danilo, Tomiyasu, Hickey; Schouten, Svanberg; Orsolini, Soriano, Barrow; Palacio
Suspended: none
Injured: Dijks, Medel, Poli, Skov Olsen

Lazio still can’t find consistency but the Dortmund win will boost their confidence. Bologna raised their level of performance but didn’t manage to play good football for 90 minutes. Both teams look like a reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
