Lazio returns to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2007 as they host Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome.
Lazio’s top-four finish in Serie A last season saw them return to the Champions League group stage for the first time since 2007, but the Roman team has a poor start to the domestic season. They haven’t won since the opening weekend at Cagliari, losing to Atalanta, in the third round they drew 1-1 with Inter on the home pitch. Lazio showed the lack of strength in depth is still a real issue, as they were dominated 3-0 by Sampdoria, Tommaso Augello getting a goal and assist for the weekend.
They made the trip to Marassi with a decimated squad, missing suspended Ciro Immobile, injured Manuel Lazzari, Senad Lulic, Luiz Felipe, Bastos, Andreas Pereira, Gonzalo Escalante, and Stefan Radu, so transfer deadline day signing Wesley Hoedt went straight into the starting XI. Samp had the more aggressive start and it eventually paid off, as Tommaso Augello whipped in a cross from the left to find a Fabio Quagliarella header into the far top corner. For the second goal, Augello blasted in off the outside of his left boot into the bottom corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance. Simone Inzaghi changed both wing-backs for the second half and Sergej Milinkovic-Savic went close with a header wide from a corner, Serbian player drilled just wide again with a first-time strike, but Sampdoria made it 3-0 at the end. Quagliarella’s shot was saved by Strakosha, Patric fell asleep on the rebound and Damsgaard blasted it in off the underside of the bar.
Lazio’s main strength and one that provides optimism that they can retain their top-four place and be decent in the Champions League is that they’ve managed to keep all their key players from last season. It won’t be easy, though, especially now they have to juggle both Serie A and the Champions League, a task made harder by the Biancocelesti’s failure to significantly strengthen their squad. They are now devastated with injuries and though their main striker and player Immobile is again available Dortmund will be trying to ruin their return to the elite.
Borrusia Dortmund is one of the sides that are more than regular among the teams that play in the UEFA Champions League, this is their tenth successive appearance in the group stage. They are maybe not close to being a title challenger in both UCL and Bundesliga but they are a side capable to participate in the knockout stage and show to the football world intriguing talents. Despite speculation about departures, they managed to hang on to the likes of Jadon Sancho while adding players like Jude Bellingham to their ranks. Their main star Erling Braut Haaland has scored 55 goals for club and country since the start of last season. In the new Bundesliga season, they won three games and lost just against Augsburg away on the day that everything turned against them and their rival scored from only two shots on target. Those are the only goals they conceded in the Bundesliga in this season. They also lost in the DFB Supercup game against Bayern but only after extra time.
In the last round in the Bundesliga, they won vs Hoffenheim 1-0 as visitors and showed they are very good defensively. Dortmund controlled possession at the PreZero Arena. BVB’s attack, made up of Sancho, Julian Brandt, and Gio Reyna, began to click at the end of the first half: the American had a shot cleared off the line by Skov before Thomas Meunier glanced a header off the crossbar from a Reyna corner. Brandt would have had a simple finish to make had he controlled Sancho’s powerful pass just before the break.
Dortmund’s control of the ball continued into the second half, but they scored a late goal, with less than 15 minutes to play, Reyna’s flick-on from a long ball sent Haaland in on goal and with Baumann closing down, the Norwegian passed across goal for Reus to slot home calmly. Dortmund remained on top and could have added to their total before the full-time whistle. The only bad thing regarding this game developed in the first half, as a head injury forced Lukasz Piszczek off early on, and Lucien Favre was forced to reshuffle by bringing on Thomas Delaney.

Lazio is not in a good moment right now, Simone Inzaghi doesn't want to negotiate a new contract and they have many injured players. Dortmund is not so consistent because of the lack of experience of the main stars but they should be a better side. Away win is a reasonable option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
