Lazio is right back in the Champions League race but hosts a Genoa side fighting for their Serie A survival and both teams miss key players. Read our reasons for Lazio vs Genoa prediction and betting tips.
Simone Inzaghi conceded game vs Milan was ‘like a final’ for Lazio, who passed the test in a ‘clear and dominant victory’ over guests. This was the tactician’s first game back on the bench after several weeks out with COVID-19, and he returned with a massive 3-0 win against the Rossoneri. Joaquin Correa bagged a brace, with the second causing a great deal of controversy, before a late Ciro Immobile strike. “This was like a final for us, the last chance to stay in the running for the top four,” Inzaghi told the media. “The lads did so well, it was a clear and dominant victory. It ended 3-0, but Gianluigi Donnarumma made saves on Immobile and Correa that only the best goalkeepers in the world can do. When Correa is in good shape, he makes his mark in the big games. He has always had this immense potential and has shaken off some injury issues. Milan did well tonight, but they came up against a Lazio side in fantastic condition.”
Lazio needed this reaction after Thursday’s 5-2 defeat away to Napoli. “It was a strange game, we were behind after eight minutes with some pretty clear incidents that didn’t go our way.” Milan also complained about the referee, specifically the second Correa goal, as Lucas Leiva seemed to foul Hakan Calhanoglu in the build-up. “I haven’t seen it, to be honest, so I will look at it later. The referee viewed it again and made his evaluation.” The battle for the Champions League spots is now absolutely wide open because Atalanta has taken second place on 68 points, followed by Milan, Napoli, and Juventus all on 66. Lazio has 61 points, but also a game in hand to be played against Torino on May 18. “We must try to reach the end of the season without regrets,” continued Inzaghi. “We’ll have many games in a short space of time and some of it will be keeping a close eye on bans and injuries. When we took over, Lazio wasn’t even in Europe. Now we’ll qualify for Europe for the fifth consecutive season and hope to be back in the Champions League, but there are other very big clubs all fighting for the same target.”
Lazio (3-5-2): Reina; Marusic, Musacchio, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Luis Alberto, Lulic; Immobile, Correa
Suspended: Acerbi
Injured: Luiz Felipe, Escalante
As for Genoa, they aren’t entirely safe yet on 36 points and Davide Ballardini again refused to commit his future to Genoa until they have secured Serie A's safety, although the 2-0 win over Spezia was a big step. The coach certainly picked his substitutions today, because Gianluca Scamacca and Eldor Shomurodov came off the bench to find the net. “We celebrate together because this is an important objective, but we’ve achieved nothing yet and from tomorrow will prepare to prepare for the next match,” Ballardini told the media. The Grifone has been completely transformed since Ballardini replaced Rolando Maran in December. “At the start of my time here, Genoa won a few games we didn’t entirely deserve. At time recently, we’ve played quite well and not been rewarded too. What surprises me is seeing the extraordinary journey Genoa has had this season. We used up so much energy today, yet held out firm in defense and were rewarded ultimately for that work as well as the goals.”
Ballardini then discussed the issues he inherited from Maran but was somewhat cryptic. “I should say something true here, but I won’t, because in football sometimes it’s better to keep things to yourself. I arrived in Week 14 and Genoa had seven points. So arriving to face Spezia, who at the time have double your points tally, then evidently there are some problems. You have to work things out quickly, inherit a tricky situation, but if we are in this position now, then it perhaps means Genoa deserves to be here. Some of the forwards for example needed time to grow, as they were new to Serie A. Since we arrived, Genoa has had an extraordinary journey, but the difficulties remain and will continue. I never dared talk about or criticize the work of those who were here before me, maybe I’m not explaining myself very well.”
Genoa (3-5-2): Perin; Masiello, Radovanovic, Criscito; Biraschi, Zajc, Badelj, Strootman, Zappacosta; Destro, Shomurodov
Suspended: Pandev
Injured: Luca Pellegrini

Lazio could set a new all-time club record with 11 consecutive Serie A home victories, as so far they’ve equaled the 10 achieved in 1937 and 1974. BettingKick’s Lazio vs Genoa prediction is: Both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
