This could be a potentially decisive result for the Champions League places, as both Lazio and second-placed Milan are coming off defeats. Read our reasons for Lazio vs Milan prediction and betting tips.
Lazio assistant manager Massimiliano Farris maintained it was ‘a different match’ after the controversial Napoli penalty, eventually losing 5-2. Farris was again standing in for coach Simone Inzaghi, who is self-isolating at home with COVID-19. This was a head-to-head for fifth place and Lazio now sits five points adrift of Napoli, albeit with a game in hand against Torino. “It cannot and must not compromise our journey, because we have a very important game coming up on Monday with Milan,” assistant manager Farris told the media. “We can consider the game in hand against Torino as a ‘bonus’ we have on top of the others and another potential three points.”
The match was immediately in the thick of controversy, as after five minutes both teams had penalty appeals, with Napoli receiving the spot-kick for Sergej Milinkovic-Savic catching Kostas Manolas on the head with his studs. “There were two games. The first lasted five minutes until the penalty, and it was different after that. Milinkovic gets the ball. There’s another angle where you can see he gets the ball. In the football I played, which admittedly was not much in Serie A, when a defender put his head down like that, he was penalized. At most you could give an indirect free kick for dangerous play, but not a penalty. Ironically, the VAR should’ve looked at the incident that occurred at the other end moments later, when Lazzari was brought down.”
Lazio did pull two back for 4-2 with Ciro Immobile and a Sergej Milinkovic-Savic free-kick. “The fresh legs came on and the two goals boosted our confidence to fight back, but we also have to give credit to Napoli for their excellent goals. The possession statistics were quite even. I think overall we knew that we had to defend very well and we didn’t do it enough. We went into their penalty area several times and Tucu Correa hit the upright when it was 2-1. Serie A games are in the balance and can change quickly. Don’t forget a few days ago we risked losing the win against Benevento because we switched off and were punished for it. Admittedly, the fifth goal knocked the wind out of us, but we fought hard to the end and did everything to get back into it. Now hopefully we can have our leader back in his place on the bench.”

Stefano Pioli feared Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Theo Hernandez won’t recover in time for the next game and insisted talks about the Super League didn't distract Milan. The Rossoneri suffered a 2-1 home defeat against Sassuolo and are set to face Lazio away on Monday. “We are not tired. The lads ran a lot. We were unlucky to concede the first goal, the ball pass through six legs. We lacked quality, but I am happy with how we occupied the spaces,” Pioli told the media. “We need to change chapter now, a defeat is always disappointing, but we need to transform this disappointment into determination,” he added. “Our future depends on the games against our direct rivals. We played a good match today. We’ll analyze all the situations, but we must be more clear-minded.”
Before the game, the club’s technical director Paolo Maldini had said the game he knew nothing about the Super League until Sunday. “Nobody can doubt Paolo’s moral integrity. He has so many values, he said what he thought,” Pioli said. Milan is one of the 12 clubs that announced the Super League on Sunday. “It didn’t distract us. Nothing is distracting us. We are focused on our target. The remaining part of the season will be very difficult, but we need to remain focused and can’t get distracted from something we haven’t decided,” the coach insisted. “We have no fear. It’s a privilege to have this pressure. We are fighting for a Champions League spot and we want to achieve it.” Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Ismael Bennacer, and Theo Hernandez missed the game with injuries. “Ibra had a calf problem. I hope he can recover [for the next game], but I am not sure, and the same goes for the others. We hope we can recover as many players as possible.”

Milan could become the first club in Serie A history to win 14 of their first 16 away games in a season. The quickest to reach 14 was Inter, who did it in 17 attempts in 2006-07. BettingKick’s Lazio vs Milan prediction is: Both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
