In the final game of the Coppa Italia, last-16 Lazio welcomes Serie A strugglers Parma to Stadio Olimpico on Thursday.
Simone Inzaghi was not surprised by Lazio’s domination of Roma, as he already saw ‘the look in their eyes’ before this 3-0 triumph. The Biancocelesti victory was never in doubt, as Ciro Immobile and Luis Alberto had made it 2-0 after 23 minutes, with the Spanish midfielder adding a third in the second half. It is the first time this season that Lazio has managed three consecutive Serie A wins, while it also equals their biggest top-flight derby triumph. “We put in a great performance, made of determination, aggression, pace, and stamina. The lads were splendid, but I already saw yesterday that the look in their eyes was the right one, unlike some previous occasions,” Inzaghi told media.
Lazio was visibly more aggressive and moving at a different pace to Roma from the very start. “Felipe Caicedo and Immobile were the first to start the press, we all worked together, we did what we needed to do as a team. We cared about this derby a great deal and felt ready to make it count. We’d lost a little bit of ground, with a few draws that could’ve been winning games for us, we might’ve already been up there. We know football has changed post-COVID, you have to wait until the last minute to see what players are available, but I hope that I can start to rotate these lads who over five years have made me incredibly happy.”
Simone Inzaghi's squad is almost all available, as only Danilo Cataldi is out injured and goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha remains a doubt - Pepe Reina should continue as the last line of defense. Midfield anchor Lucas Leiva is suspended and will most likely be replaced by either Marco Parolo or Gonzalo Escalante, while captain Senad Lulic is back in the squad after almost a year's absence and could make an appearance at some stage. Lazio released a statement confirming midfielder Luis Alberto was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery to remove his appendix so he will be out for a while.
Lazio: Reina; Hoedt, Patric, Acerbi; Lazzari, Akpa-Akpro, Parolo, Pereira, Fares; Muriqi, Correa
Parma coach Roberto D’Aversa urged the club to make new signings: ‘The sooner they arrive, the sooner we can gain survival.’ The Ducali picked up one point against Sassuolo at the Mapei Stadium with the hosts’ midfielder Filip Đuričić who converted a last-gasp spot-kick to rescue the Neroverdi. “The club must intervene,” D’Aversa told media when asked about possible new signings in January. “The longer we wait, the more difficulties we’ll face," he added.
Milan full-back Andrea Conti will have his Parma medical on Wednesday, he will join Parma on loan with an option to buy for €7m, which becomes an obligation if the club avoids relegation into Serie B. Mehdi Benatia had given the all-clear to join them as well, but last media claims are that Al-Duhail has cut off all negotiations with Parma and will not release the former Milan and Juventus center-back who played the game for his club on Tuesday. Parma is also looking at new attacking options on loan for the January transfer window. There was an approach for Wolves forward Cutrone, who saw his spell at Fiorentina cut short last week but he played at the weekend and he can't be in three teams in one season. Another target mentioned is Sevilla creative midfielder Vazquez, formerly of Palermo.
Parma may also rotate their resources in Rome - injured Vincent Laurini, Yordan Osorio, Yann Karamoh, and Lautaro Valenti are all expected to be absent again on Thursday. In goal, Simone Colombi is set to take over from Luigi Sepe, while 17-year-old Daan Dierckx could continue in the Gialloblu back four due to a shortage of bodies in defense.
Parma: Columbi; Busi, Dierckx, Iacoponi, Ricci; Hernani, Cyprien, Sohm; Brunetta, Cornelius, Gervinho

This game could be entertaining, some fringe players will get their minutes and Parma will use it to prepare for the relegation battle. Both teams to score is the most reasonable bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
