Eternal city, eternal rivalry, Lazio meet Roma on Friday night at Stadio Olimpico for the first Derby Della Capitale of the season.
Simone Inzaghi believes Lazio deserved to win against Parma and insisted Felipe Caicedo is not leaving in January. “We had the right approach to the game, I think we only ran one risk in the first half, but otherwise fully deserved to win. We should’ve opened the scoring earlier. It’s a win that can help boost our confidence and self-esteem,” Inzaghi told media after a deserved 2-0 win against struggling Parma.
Lazio opened the scoring in the second half, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic winning it back in midfield, Manuel Lazzari rolling across for relatively undisturbed Luis Alberto to sweep home from 12 yards. Luis Alberto should’ve had another moment later when sent clear by Immobile, but curled wide of the far post. Felipe Caicedo scored one of the easiest goals of his career, as it was set up on a silver platter. Milinkovic-Savic completed the give-and-go with Immobile and the delicate dink committed the goalkeeper, allowing Caicedo to tap into an empty net. The Andreas Pereira daisy-cutter flashed just wide, but Lazio seemed content to do the bare minimum, preserving energy ahead of the Rome Derby. Lazio needed this win, as they had fallen quite far behind in the Serie A standings.
Lazio should have forward Joaquin Correa back in the fold, so it remains to be seen whether he will start ahead of stand-in striker Felipe Caicedo next to Ciro Immobile. Long-term absentee, captain Senad Lulic, is nearing a full recovery but is not yet fit to start, while fellow wing-back Mohamed Fares is struggling with a calf injury. Inzaghi must do without Thomas Strakosha due to a thigh injury, so Pepe Reina is again on goal. In midfield, Lucas Leiva, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, and Luis Alberto should be a dynamic central three.
Lazio: Reina; Felipe, Radu, Acerbi; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Leiva, Alberto, Marusic; Caicedo, Immobile
Paulo Fonseca explained why the first 15-20 minutes of the second half were 'fatal' for Roma against Inter: ‘We lost the ability to press Brozovic and Vidal.’ The Giallorossi picked up a 2-2 draw at the Stadio Olimpico against the Nerazzurri, they got an advantage in the first half, conceded two early goals in the second, and saved a point five minutes from the end with Mancini’s header. “Our team lost intensity and was not as aggressive either, so it was difficult against a side like Inter when we weren’t able to press.” Roma has tended to fall apart against the bigger clubs, so could this fightback be a turning point for their season, that is the major question for Fonseca and a legitimate worry for the fans before the Derby Della Capitale. “It’s another match that we must prepare, it’ll be difficult, as Lazio are a great team. We must focus on what we can improve and that is consistency throughout the game.”
Roma's Paulo Fonseca awaits updates on the recovery of Pedro, but the former Spain winger is certainly not fit to start, so Lorenzo Pellegrini and in-form Henrikh Mkhitaryan will begin behind Edin Dzeko. Experienced goalkeeper Antonio Mirante remains out injured, so error-prone Pau Lopez - linked with a move to West Ham United in midweek - will be the Giallorossi's last line of defense. In midfield, Gonzalo Villar is still preferred to Bryan Cristante to partner Jordan Veretout, with fellow ex-La Liga aces Borja Mayoral and Carles Perez available to jump in the attack from the bench.
Roma: Lopez; Ibanez, Smalling, Mancini; Kasdorp, Veretout, Cristante, Spinazzola; Pellegrini, Mkhitaryan; Dzeko

It will be a tight affair, one of the most important matches in the season for the fans and players will try everything to avoid big mistakes as they are remembered more than in usual games. Both teams to score looks like a decent bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
