Lazio and Sassuolo aim for a European spot as they meet at the Stadio Olimpico on Sunday.
After a glorious 3-0 derby win against Roma, Lazio squeezed past Parma 2-1 with Marco Parolo and Vedat Muriqi headers, but also hit the woodwork twice, as they set up a Coppa Italia quarter-final with Atalanta on January 27. Both sides were missing numerous players, as Luis Alberto and Luiz Felipe only just had surgery, while the Ducali were without practically all their first choice forwards and defenders. Muriqi was unlucky not to score his first goal in the Lazio jersey, at full stretch turning an angled drive onto the inside of the far post. Lazio rattled the woodwork for the second time, this time with Andreas Pereira’s effort, but they took the lead moments later with a Marco Parolo free header from 12 yards on the former Manchester United midfielder’s cross.
There was a huge double opportunity for Parma on 73 minutes, as first Thomas Strakosha parried a Juan Brunetta header from close range, then Valentin Mihaila turned the rebound onto the crossbar. A Jasmin Kurtic free kick then hit the side-netting, skimming the upright, and the pressure did pay off for the equalizer. The offside trap failed on a through ball, Mihaila went clear on goal down the left and beat Strakosha one-on-one. Not for the first time this season, Lazio lost intensity as the game wore on and it looked as if this too would go to extra time, but Muriqi finally made an impact. He hit the woodwork this time as well, a header from 12 yards that bounced in off the inside of the upright, but as it hit Colombi on the way in, it was registered as an own goal.
Lazio (3-5-2): Reina; Patric, Acerbi, Radu; Lazzari, Milinkovic-Savic, Lucas Leiva, Akpa Akpro, Marusic; Correa, Immobile
Suspended: none
Injured: Luiz Felipe, Cataldi, Luis Alberto, Proto
Roberto De Zerbi complained about the pitch conditions at the Mapei Stadium as Neroverdi picked up one point against Parma and De Zerbi was happy with his side's performance. “We earned an important point, it’s nice to see a team playing against everybody, the opponents and Lady Luck,” the coach told media. “Unfortunately, many players are not fully fit. We had a goal disallowed, we hit the crossbar once and we conceded a strange goal," he continued. “We even played against our pitch, Sassuolo can’t play on a field in such poor conditions.”
Parma thought they had ended the winless streak with a Juraj Kucka header, but Filip Djuricic converted the Sassuolo equalizer with the last kick of the game. This represented an Emilia-Romagna Derby with teams in a very different form, as the Neroverdi were in the thick of the race for European places, while the Ducali were stranded in the relegation zone. Parma took the lead with their first real opportunity. Kucka was still sporting a large bandage and a bloody head but managed nonetheless to nod in the Giuseppe Pezzella cross from the left. Giacomo Raspadori’s header looped off-target in stoppages, but moments later, Maxime Busi made an entirely avoidable tackle on Gian Marco Ferrari for a penalty. Djuricic kept his cool to send Sepe the wrong way and draw Sassuolo level with the last kick of the game. Sassuolo star Domenico Berardi is still out of action with a muscle injury, while Vlad Chiriches is suspended.
Sassuolo (4-3-3): Consigli; Muldur, Ayhan, G Ferrari, Kyriakopoulos; Locatelli, Obiang; Traore, Djuricic, Defrel; Caputo
Suspended: Chiriches
Injured: Bourabia, Berardi, Romagna

Sassuolo has lost eight Serie A games against Lazio. They have the worst record only against Milan and Atalanta (9) and Juventus (11). Both teams to score looks like a very good betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
