Polish champions Legia and Cypriot league holders Omonia Nicosia will meet on Wednesday at the Wojska Polskiego in Warsaw for the 2nd qualifying round for the Group stage of the UEFA Champions League.
Legia is the Polish Ekstraklasa champion and the best team in the country. They showed that in the last season when finishing the campaign with seven points more than the second-placed team.
Legia is very ambitious to establish domination in domestic club football, they reached the agreement with a new sponsor, brought some interesting players, but also it is worth mentioning that the team is just entering the reconstruction phase.
The Polish champions failed to impress in a 1-0 win over Linfield, but thanks to Kante’s late goal they eventually set up a meeting with Omonia. He scored in the 82nd minute to settle the score with a low drive that skipped Northern Irish goalkeeper. Maciej Rosolek then hit the crossbar for Legia in the 86th minute, and four minutes later Linfield substitute Christy Manzinga rattled the inside of the post with a bouncing effort. Legia didn’t impress anyone but it was good for their coach Aleksandar Vuković to see that his foreign players need more time to adapt to the new club and playing style. Tomas Pekhart scored two times at the start of the Ekstraklasa for 2-1 away win against Rakow and he will be a man to watch vs Omonia. Match-winner against Linfield José Kanté is injured, as Marko Vesovic, Vamara Sanogo, and Dominik Nagy but Legia have a big roster after summer transfers. Igor Lewczuk, as reported by the Polish media is also under question, he was hit in the head and was transported to the hospital where he was recovered with 10 stitches.
Although the injury is not serious, his participation is a question mark and the defending duo with the most chances to start the match is Jędrzejczyk-Wieteska. The second is the player who came on as a substitute in the match when Lewczuk was injured.
Omonia was champion under very rare circumstances. They had the same number of points as second-placed Anorthosis and even minor goal difference but they were better in H2H matches and earned the right to represent Cyprus club football at this stage.
They had a difficult game in the previous round and gone to overtime before they managed to beat Armenina side Ararat as visitors with the only goal scored in 94th minute by Brasilian Thiago Santos. It was a strange match with both teams that had 21 of 22 foreign players in the starting lineups.
They are hungry for football, domestic season stopped in March and from the start of July they played friendly matches. In the first round of 1. Division they didn’t get the result they wanted because home team Pafos earned a valuable point in 2-2 draw. Coach Henning Berg, also a former coach of the Legia, said after the match that his team is a big unknown for him, regarding ups and downs during matches and contrasts in performance levels during 90 minutes but he also noted that in this game Omonia played with the mixed team trying to recover after a tough match in Armenia
. They will try to exploit the individual quality of foreign players who are capable to play possession football and exploit spaces behind Legia defenders. They have some injury concerns, but Andronikos Kakoullis and Fotis Papoulis are not that important and David Ramírez could be missed in this high profile match for Omonia.

Legia is a favorite to win this game because of several reasons. Apart from home advantage, their coach Aleksandar Vuković is very talented and great potential, and as an ex-Legia player knows how to prepare domestic and foreign players for these situations. Legia will be better than in Linfield game and a home win is a good betting option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
