LEICESTER VS SOUTHAMPTON MATCH ANALYSIS
Leicester come into this game on the back of two wins. The Foxes won their most recent league match at Newcastle (1-2) and followed it with a 4-0 victory at Stoke in Round 3 of the FA Cup. They are 3rd in the league, but only a point from leaders Liverpool and are well-positioned to make a title push in a new calendar year. As for the visitors, after two consecutive goalless draws in the league and a huge 1-0 win against Liverpool on Monday, they were given some rest after their FA Cup game against Shrewsbury was postponed after a significant number of Shrews players and staff tested positive for coronavirus.
Against the Magpies, having drawn their past two games, Leicester were in danger of dropping off the pace in the title race, but they showed their class in patches at St James' Park and deserved three points. Fine first-time finishes from James Maddison and Youri Tielemans helped Brendan Rodgers’ men close the gap at the top of the Premier League. Rodgers restored Vardy and Tielemans to the starting line-up against Newcastle and was boosted by the returns of Maddison and Timothy Castagne from injury.
The difference was telling as Leicester recorded a seventh win in nine away games this season, the best record in the top flight. They will also be buoyed by reaching the FA Cup fourth round with an emphatic win at Stoke, where even without Jamie Vardy and James Maddison, a strong Foxes side displayed too much quality for the Championship side.
The Saints, on the other hand, have staged a remarkable turnaround from their struggles at the start of the 2019-20 campaign. Even though they are in 6th place, Southampton are level with Tottenham in 4th. The Saints are still without duo Jannik Vestergaard and Nathen Redmond. However, having Ings and Armstrong back will help them take their chances in front of a goal when presented with them, as was the case against the defending champions.
Danny Ings' superb second-minute lob over Reds goalkeeper Alisson, from a James Ward-Prowse free-kick, settled the contest against his former club. Southampton's first win in five Premier League games sees them climb to sixth and brought an emotional response from manager Ralph Hasenhuttl, who sank to his knees to celebrate taking points against a side led by Klopp for the first time. Lastly, after having a few more days off due to the canceled FA Cup game, they should be roaring to go against another former champion Leicester.

Leicester have a slightly better record in their last 20 matches against Southampton with nine wins to Saints’ eight. They have won 5 of those matches at home, while visitors have won three, winning their last match here in January 2020 (2-1). Four of their last five matches ended with both teams scoring and three from five finished with more than 2.5 goals.
Rodgers restored Vardy and Tielemans to the starting line-up against Newcastle and was boosted by the returns of Maddison and Timothy Castagne from injury. The Saints, on the other hand, had a perfect game against Liverpool and their defending around the box will again be the key at the King Power Stadium.
