Can Julian Nagelsmann crown his two years at RB Leipzig with the club’s first silverware, or will Erling Haaland fire Borussia Dortmund to DFB Cup glory in Thursday’s final at the Olympiastadion in Berlin? Read our reasons for Leipzig vs Dortmund prediction and betting tips.
Nagelsmann will leave Leipzig for newly crowned Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich at the end of this season, but he could depart the Red Bull Arena having guided Die Roten Bullen to their first major trophy, five days before their 12th anniversary. RB’s league title aspirations were finally ended on Saturday when these sides met in the Bundesliga in Dortmund, slipping to a 3-2 defeat despite fighting back from 2-0 down. Nagelsmann had said beforehand that he would look to try some things out ahead of the final, but it’s expected that the core of the team will remain the same for the trip to Berlin.
Hee-chan Hwang could give way to Alexander Sörloth up top, although competition top scorer Yussuf Poulsen may fancy his chances of a recall. Playmaker Christopher Nkunku missed the league meeting with a back problem, but will likely start alongside Dani Olmo – one of the goalscorers in Dortmund – if fit. Leipzig have conceded only once on the way to the final – only facing opponents from the top two divisions – beating Nuremberg (3-0), Augsburg (3-0), Bochum (4-0), Wolfsburg (2-0) and Werder Bremen (2-1 a.e.t.).
Leipzig: Gulacsi - Klostermann, Upamecano, Orban - Mukiele, Sabitzer (c), Kampl, Angelino - Olmo, Haidara - Sörloth
Out: Samardzic (knee)
Doubtful: Adams (back), Nkunku (back), Szoboszlai (groin)
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann
Borussia are seeking to lift the DFB Cup for a fifth time, with Haaland hoping to be the man to fire them to glory if fit. The Norwegian watched (and cheered) from the stands on Saturday after a knock ruled him out of action. He has five days to prove his fitness after two weeks without training if he’s to try and win a first trophy in Germany. One player who has returned from injury in top form is Jadon Sancho, whose brace at the weekend ensured the win in the final dress rehearsal, keeping BVB’s UEFA Champions League qualification hopes very much alive.
Coach Edin Terzic will have to assess the fitness of goalkeeper Marwin Hitz after he went off at half-time following a blow to his knee. Former first-choice Roman Bürki came on and is in line to deputise in his third German cup final. Dortmund have reached Berlin for the sixth time in the last 10 years by beating Duisburg (5-0), Eintracht Braunschweig (2-0), Paderborn (3-2 a.e.t.), Borussia Mönchengladbach (1-0) and Holstein Kiel (5-0), with Sancho scoring and/or assisting in every game.
Dortmund: Bürki - Piszczek, Akanji, Hummels, Guerreiro - Can, Dahoud - Sancho, Reus (c), Reyna - Haaland
Out: Bellingham (suspended), Hitz (knee), Morey (knee), Moukoko (shin), Schmelzer (knee), Witsel (Achilles' tendon), Zagadou (knee)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Edin Terzic

Dortmund have won the DFB Cup four times, most recently in 2017 when Ousmane Dembele and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang fired them to a 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt. BettingKick’s Leipzig vs Dortmund prediction is: Both teams to score.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
