Ex leader RB Leipzig host Freiburg at the Red Bull Arena on Saturday.
Julian Nagelsmann needs to make some changes in the starting lineup due to injuries and suspensions just one week after they lost the league's leading position. One of the absentees is central defender, one of the most wanted in Europe, Dayot Upamecano, who has started all 10 competitive matches so far this season for a Leipzig team who bounced back from consecutive losses to Manchester United and Borussia Mönchengladbach with an impressive 2-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday. Leipzig is yet to drop points at home in the Bundesliga and remain third behind Bayern and Dortmund.
Julian Nagelsmann's side surrendered top spot in the Bundesliga to defending champions Bayern Munich with the Gladbach loss, and personnel issues continue to erode Nagelsmann's rotation options, with defender Lukas Klostermann and midfielder Konrad Laimer, still unavailable. Nagelsmann's side has had the most shots on goal league-wide (110), but only 12 have gone in, which is half as many goals as Bayern have scored.
Teenaged playmaker Lazar Samardzic was a surprise inclusion in the starting line-up against Gladbach but is expected to make way on Saturday for either Christopher Nkunku or Emil Forsberg, who started against Paris. Yussuf Poulsen could lead the line ahead of Alexander Sorloth after impressing off the bench on Wednesday. If he plays, Forsberg will make his 100th Bundesliga appearance for the club who were only promoted to the top flight in 2016. The Swede has two goals and an assist from his six league games this term.
Leipzig: Gulacsi - Konate, Henrichs, Orban - Haidara, Sabitzer (c), Kampl, Angelino - Olmo, Forsberg - Poulsen
Out: Klostermann (knee), Laimer (knee), Upamecano
Doubtful: Halstenberg (groin)
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann
Freiburg will be hoping Leipzig's demanding schedule has the desired fatigue effect as they go in search of a first win since their 3-2 triumph over promoted VfB Stuttgart on the opening weekend. Christian Streich's men fell to a 4-2 loss at home to top-four candidates Bayer Leverkusen last time out and were soundly beaten by second-placed Borussia Dortmund on Matchday 3. They threw away 1-0 leads in their other three league fixtures, drawing 1-1 with Wolfsburg, Werder Bremen, and Union Berlin, and begin the weekend in 13th place - just four points outside the relegation zone. Freiburg has dropped a league-worst nine points from winning positions this season and remain without a win in five Bundesliga games.
Nils Petersen came off the bench against Leverkusen to score his team-leading third Bundesliga goal of the season and top-flight record 26th as a substitute. The former Germany international should lead the line from the start at the Red Bull Arena, with Lukas Kübler set to make way. Jonathan Schmid should start on the right-side of a defense that hasn't kept a clean sheet since the 4-0 drubbing of Schalke on the final day of 2019/20.
Vincenzo Grifo has two goals and two assists from his six league appearances, which is more goal-involvements than any Leipzig player has managed. Freiburg was undefeated against Leipzig last season, winning 2-1 at home before a 1-1 draw at the Red Bull Arena.
Freiburg: Müller - Schmid, Lienhart, Heintz, Günter (c) - Sallai, Santamaria, Höfler, Grifo - Höler, Petersen
Out: Flekken (elbow), Haberer (ankle)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Christian Streich

Leipzig was impressive against Paris Saint Germain in the midweek, and that performance can give them a lift after a first loss in the Bundesliga from the last weekend. Freiburg is a decent side, hard to beat team, but a home win is a reasonable bet option.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
