Can RB Leipzig defend second place when Bayer Leverkusen storm into the Red Bull Arena looking to overtake them on Saturday?
Leipzig has had an indifferent start to 2021, including a shock 3-2 defeat to relegation-threatened Mainz last weekend. Julian Nagelsmann’s side is still in second, but the gap to leaders Bayern Munich has now stretched seven points, meaning they can ill afford more slip-ups – starting when they host a Leverkusen team only three points behind them in third. American Tyler Adams scored his first Bundesliga goal in last week’s loss but is at risk of dropping out of the starting XI in a midfield reshuffle that is set to include returns for Kevin Kampl and Nordi Mukiele.
Alexander Sörloth led the line in Mainz and should do so again. Nagelsmann might have liked to revert to his ‘false 9’ of Emil Forsberg, but the Swede has a knee injury. Yussuf Poulsen is also an option after overcoming a groin problem. Upamecano has missed only one game at the heart of the league’s meanest defense. A league-high 15 different players have scored for Leipzig so far this season. Angelino, Forsberg, and Poulsen lead the way with four apiece.
Leipzig: Gulacsi - Klostermann, Upamecano, Orban - Mukiele, Sabitzer (c) Kampl, Angelino - Nkunku, Olmo - Sörloth
Out: Forsberg (knee), Henrichs (knee), Laimer (knee), Szoboszlai (groin)
Doubtful: Konate (ankle)
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann
The second-tightest defense is currently held by Leverkusen, despite the fact they have lost four out of six games since their 12-match unbeaten start was ended by Bayern. Still, Die Werkself have beaten Borussia Dortmund in that run, with Bailey providing one of the assists in the 2-1 win, meaning the Jamaican has scored four and set up five in 17 appearances this season. January signing Tim Fosu-Mensah was a half-time substitute in last week’s 1-0 defeat at home to Wolfsburg and is in line for his full Bundesliga debut at right-back should a calf problem get the better of Lars Bender.
Captain Charles Aranguiz is fit again, likely to form a midfield trio with Florian Wirtz and Kerem Demirbay. The big question for Peter Bosz is whether he opts for Lucas Alario or Patrik Schick up top. The Argentine got the nod last time out but may have to give way after drawing a blank. Alario is Leverkusen’s eight-goal leading marksman but hasn’t found the net in seven. Bailey, along with Alario, has had a direct hand in the most goals: nine all told, comprising four goals and five assists.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L.Bender, Tah, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Wirtz, Aranguiz (c), Demirbay - Bailey, Schick, Diaby
Out: Amiri (not included), Arias (ankle), Baumgartlinger (knee), Paulinho (knee), Weiser (thigh)
Doubtful: S. Bender (knee)
Coach: Peter Bosz

Four of the nine Bundesliga meetings between Leipzig and Leverkusen have ended in draws, including the last three in a row (all 1-1). Leipzig has won four, Leverkusen one. Both teams to score looks like a decent bet.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
