RB Leipzig take on FSV Mainz 05 in their first Bundesliga game of the 2020/21 season on Sunday.
UEFA Champions League semi-finalists RB Leipzig and 3rd place team in the Bundesliga from last season had a memorable time against Mainz in two previous games, winning their two Bundesliga meetings by a combined score of 13. Leipzig won 8-0 at home in November last year before a 5-0 rout at Mainz in May. Leading scorer Timo Werner, who netted a hat-trick in both encounters, has left for Chelsea, and his replacement Hee-chan Hwang from Salzburg scored the final goal in Leipzig’s 3-0 DFB Pokal win at Nuremberg last weekend. Goals were scored by Amadou Haidara (3'), Yussuf Poulsen (68'), and Hee-Chan Hwang (90'). Leipzig, who impressed football fans across the world, failed to win in ten of their 17 home games last season and must change that to aim the biggest prize in the Bundesliga, the title.
Freshly capped senior France international Upamecano helped the second-tightest defense in the Bundesliga last term and he has a new teammate with the arrival of Benjamin Henrichs from Monaco. Angelino extended a loan deal from Manchester City, while American Tyler Adams also got his chance in a back three. Upamecano averaged 11 challenges won per match in the Bundesliga for Leipzig last season. Nagelsmann is the Bundesliga's youngest ever coach, having first taken charge of Hoffenheim at 28. At 33, he is still only three years older than his Leipzig goalkeeper, Peter Gulacsi. Leipzig is the league's youngest team, having first gained promotion in 2016. Marcel Sabitzer, Ibrahima Konate, and Konrad Laimer are currently recovering from injuries and may not be able to play a part in this game. Hugo Novoa and Josep Martinez are currently in quarantine and have been ruled out of this fixture.
Leipzig: Gulacsi - Klostermann, Upamecano, Halstenberg - Mukiele, Sabitzer (c), Kampl, Angelino - Olmo, Nkunku - Hwang
Out: Hartmann (knee), Konate (hip), Laimer (knee), Martinez (not included)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Julian Nagelsmann
Mainz is heading into their 12th consecutive season of Bundesliga football. They finished in thirteenth place in the Bundesliga table and had their fair share of defensive issues through the year but finished the last campaign strongly with defeat in only five of their final 13 games with victories over Borussia Dortmund, Hertha Berlin, and Frankfurt in that period. Mainz also got their campaign off to a winning start in the Cup, coming from behind with five second-half goals to beat fourth-tier Havelse 5-1. Jean-Philippe Mateta, who missed half of last season with a knee injury, scored a hat-trick. Coach Achim Beierlorzer, who was caretaker boss at Leipzig in 2015 and served as Ralf Rangnick’s assistant as they were promoted to the Bundesliga, confirmed Robin Zentner as the Mainz first-choice goalkeeper. Youngster Jonathan Burkardt impressed in the midweek but will likely have to make way for last season’s top scorer, Robin Quaison. The Sweden forward top-scored with 13 goals last term. Summer signing Luca Killian is likely to make his Mainz debut against Leipzig. Edimilson Fernandes, Stefan Bell, Pierre Kunde Malong, and Dong-Won Ji are yet to receive the medical all-clear and might have to remain on the sidelines for this game.
Mainz: Zentner - Baku, St. Juste, Niakhate, Brosinksi - Barreiro, Latza (c) - Onisiwo, Boetius, Quaison - Mateta
Out: Bell (not included), Fernandes (match fitness), Kunde (not included)
Doubtful: Ji (knee)
Coach: Achim Beierlorzer

RB Leipzig has excellent attacking firepower and the ability to change style and strategy during the game. Julian Nagelsmann's squad is one of the best in the Bundesliga and should be able to win this game and show that they learned from last season's mistakes on home ground.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
