Bayer Leverkusen will try to score several times past the in-form Augsburg goalkeeper Rafal Gikiewicz at the BayArena on Monday.
Leverkusen ended a run of three straight draws in their 1-0 win at bottom side Mainz a week ago. Alario scored the decisive goal and, with summer signing Patrik Schick still on the sidelines, will shoulder the bulk of the goal-scoring responsibilities on home turf, just as he did in UEFA Europa League action against Nice on Thursday. Alario scored his 26th Bundesliga goal last time out. However, in his 77 German top-flight appearances to date, he has never found the net in back-to-back matches.
The Argentina international helped his side to a 6-2 thrashing of their French opponents as Leverkusen extended their unbeaten start in 2020/21 to six competitive matches. The last time they went five straight league games without defeat at the start of a season was in 2009/10 under Jupp Heynckes. Leverkusen is unbeaten in their 18 Bundesliga meetings with Augsburg to date. No other Bundesliga club has faced a team as often without losing.
Teenaged midfielder Florian Wirtz came through the game following an abdominal complaint, but captain Charles Aranguiz sat out on Thursday with a muscular problem. Austria international Julian Baumgartlinger should continue to anchor the midfield.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - L. Bender (c), S. Bender, Tapsoba, Sinkgraven - Baumgartlinger - Bailey, Wirtz, Demirbay, Diaby - Alario
Out: Arias (ankle), Paulinho (knee), Schick (thigh)
Doubtful: Aranguiz (muscular), Jedvaj (ill)
Coach: Peter Bosz
Augsburg lost for the first time this season on Matchday 4, Heiko Herrlich's surprise package went down 2-0 at home to leaders RB Leipzig. They don't have the best record in meetings with Leverkusen, Augsburg has lost their last four meetings with the next rival, scoring one and conceding 10, but their Matchday 2 win over Borussia Dortmund should provide all the inspiration they need to break the four-match losing cycle. Herrlich - Peter Bosz's predecessor at Leverkusen - has certainly added a steely dimension to Augsburg's game. Herrlich won 22 of his 51 matches in charge of Leverkusen between July 2017 and December 2018 (43 percent). He has won five of 14 at the Augsburg helm (36 percent).
The Bavarians lost five away games in a row before his appointment, but have won three, drawn three, and lost one on the road since. The signing of Gikiewicz from Union Berlin has made them an even tougher nut to crack, the Polish custodian having saved 16 of the 19 shots on his goal so far this season. At the other end, Florian Niederlechner is still waiting to open his league account in 2002/21 after finishing the previous campaign on a team-leading 13 goals and eight assists. The 29-year-old forward was a second-half substitute against Leipzig but should start this one, with Fredrik Jensen likely to make way.
Daniel Caligiuri is Augsburg’s most productive player after four matches with one goal, one assist, and three attempts on goal. The Italy international has two goals and as many assists in 16 career Bundesliga appearances against Leverkusen.
Augsburg: Gikiewicz - Framberger, Gouweleeuw (c), Uduokhai, Iago - Vargas, Khedira, Gruezo, Caligiuri - Gregoritsch, Niederlechner
Out: Finnbogason (thigh), Moravek (muscular)
Doubtful: -
Coach: Heiko Herrlich

Leverkusen found a scoring touch in time to get themselves a few more points on the board and to ease pressure from the defense that had to be near perfect to gave them rewards from the previous games. The home team must be a favorite for the win despite fatigue from the UEL match against Nice.

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
