Leon Bailey is pushing for his first start under Hannes Wolf when Bayer Leverkusen host Rhineland neighbors Koln on Saturday. Read our reasons for Leverkusen vs Koln prediction and betting tips.
Jamaican winger Bailey has had a hand in a team-leading 12 Bundesliga goals this season but has been used as a second-half substitute in Bayer's first two games under Wolf. The nature of Monday's goalless draw at Hoffenheim suggests personnel changes are afoot, though, and Bailey could be among those too. Patrik Schick is another contender for the starting line-up, with Lucas Alario - who scored his 10th league goal of the season in the 2-1 win over Schalke two weeks ago - possibly making way. Alario is Leverkusen’s top scorer in this season’s Bundesliga with 10 goals in 23 appearances, at a clip of one every 122 minutes.
Whoever gets the nod, Wolf essentially has the same group of players at his disposal as he did in Sinsheim. Wolf has taken four points from a possible six since replacing Peter Bosz. It's the best start made by any Leverkusen coach since Roger Schmidt kicked off his tenure in 2014/15 with back-to-back wins, followed by a draw. A win would take Bayer back up to fifth - for 24 hours at least - with Dortmund taking on Werder Bremen on Sunday. Florian Wirtz won the 2018/19 B-Junior Bundesliga title with Koln, before joining Leverkusen in January 2020.
Leverkusen: Hradecky - Jedvaj, S. Bender, Tapsoba - Diaby, Palacios, Aranguiz (c), Wendell - Wirtz, Demirbay - Alario
Out: Arias (ankle), Baumgartlinger (knee), L. Bender (knee), Fosu-Mensah (knee),
Doubtful: Paulinho (knee)
Coach: Hannes Wolf
Koln makes the 24-mile hop to the Bay Arena without joint-leading scorer Ondrej Duda. Midfield trio Duda, Elvis Rexbecaj and Ellyes Skhiri have each scored five Bundesliga goals for Koln this season. The Slovakian midfielder, who has moonlighted as a central striker for the majority of the campaign, serves a mandatory one-match ban. His most recent booking came as the Billy Goats slipped to a last-gasp defeat to Mainz that spelled the end for head coach Markus Gisdol.
Friedhelm Funkel has been parachuted in on a deal until the end of the season, with the sole aim of keeping the Cathedral City club afloat. Winless in eight, they begin the weekend in 17th place, three points adrift of the relegation play-off spot, and with Sweden international Sebastian Andersson a doubt once again, which could see Emmanuel Dennis lead the line in Duda's place. Funkel is back in a Bundesliga dugout for the first time since suffering a 3-0 defeat to Leverkusen, which cost him a job as Fortuna Düsseldorf head coach in late January 2020
Koln: T. Horn - Ehizibue, Bornauw, Czichos, Katterbach - Skhiri, Hector (c) - Wolf, Rexhbecaj, Kainz - Dennis
Out: Duda (suspended), Jakobs (ankle)
Doubtful: Andersson (knee), Mere (muscular), Thielmann (muscular)
Coach: Friedhelm Funkel

Daniel Garcia is originally from Basque Country, and as a kid who grew up just a few streets from Mendizorrotza Stadium, the choice of Deportivo Alavés as his favourite club is more than obvious. Because of his studies, he moved to Madrid where he graduated in Sports Journalism. Daniel plays football on the weekends, but that does not stop him from watching all La Liga matches. He believes that the outcome of a match can be predicted if all the parameters are analyzed well, including form of the players and weather conditions. Currently he is living in Belgrade, and is in love with a Serbian girl who works as a journalist at one of the famous Sport Channels in Serbia.
